Braxton Hicks - Would I know it if I felt it?

Lately, I've been occasionally feeling different sensations in my stomach, similar to the tightening that I've heard described with BH. It's not painful, just awkward feeling at times and because it's so random, I sometimes wonder if it's the baby shifting into an uncomfortable spot.

How can I differentiate if it's Braxton Hicks? And if I can't tell if I'm having BH contractions, how will I tell when I have REAL contractions?! lol

Re: Braxton Hicks - Would I know it if I felt it?

could be braxton hicks! with DS 1 i was in preterm labor and had contractions throughout my pregnancy and didn't even know! They wernt painful - eventually they taught me how to figure it out bc i was monitored on a machine and it would say when i was having one so id look to see what was happening different. It basically feels like you're making a stomach muscle and can't control it. if you poke at your stomach its super hard. Mine never hurt with DS 1 - with DD this time around, they're like real minor labor pains! I know pretty much every time

I think its BH...for a while I was feeling like my whole upper stomach was turning into a rock and just thought it was the baby stretching or pushing but then after it happened a few times i realized that when we was pushing or stretching it was more localized, whereas the BH was my whole stomach and rock hard

For me, BH made my stomach hard as a rock and were pretty uncomfortable but not painful at all. Around 20w or so I asked the doc that exact question, how can I tell the diff between BH and the baby moving. I realized if it was the baby it wouldn't get THAT hard.

Real contractions felt like menstrual cramps that got more painful and more intense.

oh you will know!! I had BH for awhile during my first pregnancy. it is just as you described, a tightening at random times, but they happened to me all day long! i thought the same thing that i wouldn't know when i was in labor, but i definitely knew the difference.

Everyone said oh, you'll know the difference, but to be honest when I was first getting the real contractions I wasn't sure what they were. The difference for me was the cramping feeling that came along with the hardening of the belly. By the time they were 10 minutes apart I got the idea that they were real.

thanks for all the feedback ladies!! at least I know I'm not hallucinating it or anything. all of the sudden, I'll be like "whoaaa what is this cramping sensation?!" so at least that makes sense.

I was never able to tell!! I *think* it was the tightening sensation. It's so hard to figure it out because you really don't know what you are looking for!

It sounds like BH but if you feel them coming on more frequent, start writing them down to see how close together they are. If you start to see a pattern developing, call your doctor, as it could be a sign of pre-term labor. That's how I was able to differentiate the two and thank God I wrote them down b/c I was able to see the frequency of my contractions and know it wasn't just BH but preterm labor beginning.

Your stomach gets tight / hard. You actually might think LO is kicking you. That's what I thought. When I went into the hospital -- with no contractions by the way because I was induced -- I had that same feeling. Doc asked me if I felt it and I'm like yeah, he kicked! Doc said no, you're having contractions!

I realized then that I was feeling that feeling for a good month or so plus before I actually gave birth. didn't hurt at all.

Yes write them down if you're feeling them frequently. That's how I knew I was going into labor.

this is good to know! I'll definitely take note of it a little more. it's crazy how hard the spots on my belly get at times - it feels like a rock in there!
