How do you know the difference between braxton hicks and regular contractions?

How do you know the difference between braxton hicks and regular contractions?
May be a stupid question..but how do you tell the difference? Do real contractions hurt worse...or do you just have to wait and time them and see if they intensify to tell they are real contractions? Thanks!!

I just asked my dr this as I was 38.5 weeks and feeling "contracting pains. Turns out it was BH. I "thought" BH was for like week 32-24ish. BH the way I felt it was painless and it just kinda grabbed my skin then released. He said the pain would intensify and most people felt it come from the back to the front and the WHOLE belly tighten. Mine kinda felt like it was lower like below the belly.
