Borrowing books from the library
I love reading and the library is one of my fav places so I love taking my kids to the library. My kids love books so we go to there often. Some people have mentioned all the germs with the books but it never stops me from taking them. Do you borrow books for your kids at the library?

Borrowing books from the library
I loved taking books out when I was a kid and I really want DD to have the same love of reading that I did. We've been going to the library since she was tiny and we have taken books out on occasion. So far we've only taken out board books and I just make sure she doesn't put them in her mouth and don't leave them within her reach other than when I'm reading them with her. I definitely think about the germs but they're everywhere. If she plays in the play area at the library, touches things at a park, holds onto the shopping cart, etc there are going to be germs. I don't want to shelter her so much that when she hits school she won't be able to fight anything off. At 17 months, DD has only been sick once (although I had strong suspicions she picked up the virus while playing at the library - on a day we didn't take books out!) Lol

Re: Borrowing books from the library
I've thought about it but eh, germs are everywhere. It's probably no worse than a trip to the food store or even a regular day in her nursery school class. As a young kid, I loved going to the library and taking out new books. My dad took me every Tuesday evening. I'd love to instill the same love for the library and books in DD. We've been going since she's 2.5 and she loves getting new books every couple of weeks.

Re: Borrowing books from the library
I used to put library books in the freezer when I got home to kill the germs but I've gotten a little less crazy recently. I need to calm my germophobia craziness and this is an area where I try to practice my germy calming techniques DD gets such a thrill over the piles of books we get, it's totally worth it!

We take books out of the library alllllll the time. I did as a child too..........and I've lived to tell the tale. Germs are everywhere, they are unavoidable.

all the time. dd is 11 months and loves chewing her books... so I keep the library books separate. I read those to her while she's in her high chair, occupied with puffs or a toy or something.

Re: Borrowing books from the library
My grandmother just retired from the library. She is 80. Worked there for 40 years. Lady hardly gets sick!!
There are germs on everything....I think the benefits of taking books out of the library outweigh the germs!

My mother in law retired after 20 years a few years ago adn still works there part time and is barely sick either.
Before the kids were born, I would take books out for me all the time (now I don't have as much time to read lol but, I will get one occasionally).
I let the boys take out books as well. We don't do it often since my older DS feels like he should be able to keep the book so it can be a fight returning them.

Ditto. I absolutely have no fear of germs on library books... I'm more careful of germs during flu season though. Just in case.

Yes, we go to the library every two weeks. They also use the library at school. The potential for germs never occurred to me. I'm also not a germophobe, so I'm not hypersensitive about stuff like that.

Re: Borrowing books from the library
Germs only live so long on surfaces. I am a total germaphobe. I don't stress it too much. The kid with the drippy nose coughing up a storm in storytime worries me more. I make the kids wash after using them but them but the reality is the door, the kid in school or the toy the put in their mouth are probably more skeevy.
I do sometimes take a wipe to the covers during flu season but I don't keep them from the books. Both kids have books in their classroom those are used more frequently than most that probably sit on the shelves for weeks or longer at the library.

Re: Borrowing books from the library
We are avoiding the library and buy only used books that go through a cleaning process, but I prefer new shrink wrapped books. I also wash clothes right after taking them out of the shopping back and wipe the inside of new shoes with alcohol.
I want DS to start reading from paper books, when he turns 4, getting him some kind of tablet to read books on.

Re: Borrowing books from the library
DH used to dislike library books. Now we make it a priority to go to the library once a week. I do admit sometimes the kids bring home some books that are prob 20 yrs old and I hate them on the bed.

Never thought of this for one second. I am not a clean freak like that and that is probably why my kids barely ever get sick. You need to have some dirt in your lives. Everyone is killing their immune system.

You have made me change my mind that I am a germaphobe, you really go all out! No fear that you're not exposing your child to enough germs to build up some immunity?
Your article really didn't teach me anything or deter me from taking out library books, especially since the conclusion is "But the most alarming samples came from door knobs in the library."... a no-brainer and why I always use a paper towel or my shirt to open public doorknobs.
