We take books out of the library alllllll the time. I did as a child too..........and I've lived to tell the tale. Chat Icon Germs are everywhere, they are unavoidable.

Ditto. Maybe all the exposure to everything is beefing up their immune system, because my two DC are basically never sick.

Library books skeeeeve me. I dread when my kids will want to borrow library books.

Really? It never really crossed my mind until someone mentioned it to me.

Yes they are icky but I will eventually take books out when they are older b/c they will enjoy it and germs are everywhere. My kids still eat books and everything else so I wouldn't get them books now. When I try to read to them they just focus on trying to eat and rip the book.

Re: Borrowing books from the library

Since my DD still mouths books, I'm not taking them out for her yet, but when she's older, I certainly will. I loved going to the library as a kid. I was an avid reader, and was thrilled to check out a stack of books. The germs only occurred to me in regard to her mouthing them, but I also don't want her ruining the books for others.

Brielle KILLED her Brown Bear book. Like ate and ripped the spine apart. And they tear magazines so real books need to be kept at a distance.. I need to have them in their cribs if I read paper Golden books. Chat Icon

But they LOVE books and flipping the pages.

I seriously never even thought of it. I honestly don't think it's a risk. Unless someone just sneezed on the book, I don't see how you could get sick from a library book.

We are avoiding the library and buy only used books that go through a cleaning process, but I prefer new shrink wrapped books. I also wash clothes right after taking them out of the shopping back and wipe the inside of new shoes with alcohol.

I want DS to start reading from paper books, when he turns 4, getting him some kind of tablet to read books on.

Are you serious??
You must be exaggerating a little bit right? I hope?
Children need exposure to germs. That is how they build up their immune systems.

yup. i work in the hospital so i can imagine all kinds of things i bring home. it should be okay if your kid has a healthy immune system.
i am convinced we are too "clean" with all the hand sanitizers etc. we are killing off beneficial bacteria as well making us sick ironically. but that's for a whole other thread.

You do know once your child begins public school they will be going to the school library at least once a week? And their classrooms are teeming with books that other children have touched?

Borrowing books from the library

I loved the library as a child and still do. My son already has a love for reading and the library is within walking distance. He loves going to the library, looking at the fish in the fish tank, and playing with the puzzles while I pick out new books for him. We hit the Purell dispenser on the way out, and wash his hands when we get home. I work in an elementary school and he goes to daycare, so library books are the least of my worries!

Re: Borrowing books from the library

I really would not worry about this at all. With that said, the children's librarian where we live is so incredibly rude so I don't like going there with my kids. I can't wait for her to retire. She should have left years ago. She made fun and laughed at my then two year old child for falling down and cutting himself. To say I don't like her is an understatement.

Re: Borrowing books from the library

Lol, I never even got as far as to think about the affect of germs on dd! I am totally skeeved by any sort of shared or used book for myself, let alone her! I once had a used book with a weird brown stain on a page and that did it for me!

Eta: it's not so much the germ/getting sick factor as much as a general gross out psychological thing to think that book was at someone's breakfast table with jelly on fingers or in someone's bathroom!

Re: Borrowing books from the library

The way I see it, a playground is far more germy and my DS will def get his share of playgrounds! I'm a pretty big germaphobe but def not enough to make me steer clear of the library. We'll be going there as soon as my DS is the age where he will get enjoyment from it.

"But the most alarming samples came from door knobs in the library."... a no-brainer and why I always use a paper towel or my shirt to open public doorknobs. Chat Icon

... i guess i'm lucky my library has automatic doors!!... haha
