Reminder to Re-Register for the Basic STAR Exemption
Before you forget over the Holidays, New York State homeowners should remember that we need to Re-register for the STAR Basic Exemption by December 31st. They're making everyone re-register as a way of weeding out fraud and out-of-date records. If you don't re-register, you'll be paying the amount that you used to be saving. Of course, if your combined household income is over $500K, you don't get this Exemption, anyway. But for poorer folk like me, Go to http://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/property/star13/
Link to Re-Register for STAR
before 12/31.
It only takes 5 minutes.

Re: Reminder to Re-Register for the Basic STAR Exemption
And, I just wanted to add that according to the following article, the average Long Island homeowner saves $700 with this Exemption.
So, 5 minutes on-line is far better than coming up with another $700 or so because of some bureaucratic exercise.

Re: Reminder to Re-Register for the Basic STAR Exemption
Great reminder! Thanks for posting it.
The Basic STAR exemption in my school district (everyone within the same school district ges the same exemption amount, regardless of house, lot size, etc) is approximately $1400. Surrounding school districts range from $1200-over $1500, so it's definitely worth it!

Just did mine last week...I must have missed how to submit online, so I just printed the form and mailed it in. Got my receipt already!

Reminder to Re-Register for the Basic STAR Exemption
Those who re-registered online - did you get an email or anything? I got a confirmation when I submitted but, I wanted to verify that I wasn't missing anything.

There's a confirmation page that you can print out, if you'd like.

Reminder to Re-Register for the Basic STAR Exemption
Is there a way to check if I did it already without going through the whole registration process? I remember doing it but I don't remember if I finished or not. Preggo brain at it's finest lol.
My tax bill that I just got for this year reflects STAR so I'm assuming it went through.

Re: Reminder to Re-Register for the Basic STAR Exemption
The whole process literally takes 3 minutes, so doing it again shouldn't be too painful. The hardest part will be remembering your and your DH's SS#.
But, if you still don't want to go through the website experience, you can call them at (518) 457-2036.

Re: Reminder to Re-Register for the Basic STAR Exemption
i filled out an application MONTHS AND MONTHS AGO!! they sent me a letter asking for 2011 tax return by end of november. i sent them the missing info in the beginning of november certified with a return receipt. i checked online and my name isnt on there!!! i called and was told to 311 and i spoke to someone who "opened a case" for me and sent me email confirmation that they were looking into it. today i get an email notification stating that they closed my case because there isnt an application on file!! According to the mailings that I've been receiving from various politicians this week, you should also call the number listed above for such a question.
