Weird thing happened last night...
So after midnight last night (DH and I were fast asleep) someone rang our doorbell. Not just once but 3 or 4 times in a row quickly. DH hopped out of bed and went downstairs (didn't turn on lights or open door) but didn't see anything outside.
Thankfully we have a very large, intimidating dog and a security system. We live in a really low-crime area but this freaked me out!! I was eventually able to fall back asleep but DH was on patrol all evening and barely slept. 
I really don't think it was "kids" given that it was a Monday night, freeeeezing outside, and not during a school break. What do you think?

Maybe the cold caused an electrical short that made the bell go off?

Did you both hear it? There have been times where I've woken up suddenly and told DH that someone was banging on the door...only DH was still awake and it was all in my dream.
That used to happen to me when I lived alone...talk about scary! I would rely on my cat to see if it was real or not. The cat was always asleep, which made me realize that it was a dream.
If it was real and not a dream that one of you had...that's pretty frightening. Maybe ask if any of your neighbord have security cameras that you can take a look at?

Weird thing happened last night...
that is scary. I would say maybe either the cold caused something to malfunction or a gust of wind possibly set it off? Maybe a piece of debris from flew into it due to the wind? Far fetched, but stranger things have happened.

Def not a dream since we both reacted to it, but that happened to be in the past, too.
In any event we have been talking about putting in security cameras, so this will motivate us to do it sooner.

Maybe it's something with the wiring? This happened in my old place, on a day off from work, naturally. It just rang and rang and rang for hours. I lived on the second floor in a three family house and mine was the only doorbell going off like that. My dogs were flipping out, barking like crazy. Eventually I had to take the chimes out to keep my sanity until someone could fix it. But we had a few phantom rings in the weeks before.

Is it a hard wired door bell, or one of those ones that plug into the wall, and you stick the button up?

My thought is some kind of short in the doorbell.
I have had that happen before.
Scary as shit though- I agree.

I would think maybe some kind of problem with the bell. If not that, does your house look empty? Maybe it was a burglar who wanted to see if anyone was home? I know that sounds weird, but maybe they would have broken in had a light not turned on or whatever. Very strange!

I agree that it most likely was a doorbell malfunction of some type. Why would a criminal ring the bell, KWIM? Knocking is just as efficient to see what kind of response a dog will have, and less noticeable...
Also, where I used to live, our landlords and their neighbor 3 houses away had the same doorbell on the same frequency...every time someone rang his doorbell our landlords doorbell would go off. It took them months to figure it out.

I actually don't think it was something wrong with the doorbell. I would be very careful about that. Someone I know had this happen to her. Her husband stayed up most of the night. A couple days later their neighbor said he saw a few men going up their driveway. A few days after that a house was broken into and they tied up and robbed an elderly woman.
You never know.

Weird thing happened last night...
I had a similar 'scare' last night. At about 4am, my husband and I woke up to a beeping sound. I sent him downstairs to investigate. Turns out it was the alarm on our fridge! The one that goes off if you keep the door open too long but the door was shut. My hubsand said he thinks the power must have gone out and came back on during the night. Needless to say, it was a little spooky.

Could've been the doorbell.
We had a doorbell on the front and side door.
The side door not only started going off but would change the ring tone each time. Really freaky! We just took it down since no one uses the side door anyway.

This happened to us recently, and it's because the doorbell transformer went. It freaked us out when it happened, and there was nobody outside (we watched from a window). Our doorbell is hard-wired.

A couple of years ago when my DD was just a toddler that happened to us: dead of the night, 4 VERY loud bangs on our front door ( we dont have a bell).
We both jumped up and ran to check all windows and doors- lights on porch showed noone. DH smartly did not go outside to look around. To this day we have no idea what it was and it never happened again.
Strangly, a few days later, my DD said she saw a "man in her room" and later pointed to a picture of my husband's grandfather and called him "the man".
Always wondered if this spirit sighting was related to the banging somehow.

Im not trying to make you uncomfortable. Howevere it sounds to me like someone ringing the doorbell to see if you were home. I bet if the dog/lights etc did not go on the house would have been broken into.
