Tell me about working in higher education

A lot of this is going to be vague, so I apologize in advance.

I have complained enough on here about my current job status. I may have an opportunity at a private college. I would not be teaching there. I don't have any specific questions. I am just nervous. This is really my first time working in the private sector as a grown-up. I just want to know what to expect, pros/cons. I think I am most nervous about when my son gets sick (although it's been rough balancing that with my current job anyway).

I have had a few very rough years and I feel like this would be an excellent opportunity. I'm just looking for some insight so I'm prepared.

Feel free to FM me.

Thanks in advance and please keep your fingers crossed!

Re: Tell me about working in higher education

I have worked in higher Ed for 8 years. I have a masters degree and do not make very much money but I have good benefits - including tuition remission and exchange for my kids. My boss is pretty flexible and I get 5 weeks vacation.
Feel free to ask any questions.

Re: Tell me about working in higher education

Only going on what some friends have told me......they can be very bureaucratic environments.

Often filled with the "old bag" type women who create lots of issues out of nothing.

I know at least 3 people who have left roles working in higher ed because of this.

(They weren't in teaching).

With that said, I wish you the best of luck. I know you've been looking for awhile. If anything maybe it will turn out to be something good, or a stepping stone if not.

ETA: These were SUNY schools though. I went to one as a student and remember some of the people who worked there and how awful they were. It may be a lot different in a private college. I also think that if you've been in a rough job situation, you often appreciate what you do have a lot more and therefore can put up with some things a lot better. Chat Icon

Re: Tell me about working in higher education

I agree with both of the above posters. Once I figured out you never really had to leave college, I went into higher ed right after I graduated undergrad. College was one of the best times of my life which is why I got into the field 10 years ago. I think it can be great for parents with the time off you get (not as much as you get working in a elementary or high school but still a decent amount). Also, most higher ed jobs are pretty stable and do offer perks like tuition remission and even free/reduced tuition for your children. All that said, it can be very bureaucratic and and sometimes clique like depending on the type of office setting your are in. At this point for me I am ready for a change. However, it is a good field and it's all what you make of it. CongratsChat Icon

I think it depends on the office and the college that you work in. My sister works in student activities and I would never in a million years want her job. She works ridiculous hours for very little money. If you have specific questions, feel free to FM me.
