My stepmother is a NYC teacher, and has been for 30 or so years. She wouldn't leave the city for anything, but it has definitely taken it's toll on her. She lost twins at 6 months about 17 years ago, and I think she is STILL paying back the time-off she had to take, all because she didn't bring home a live baby.
I dont understand this (totally off subject lol) but she would be entitled to use her sick days and then take FMLA. You can borrow up to 20 days , you can also take a leave . In other words no way she would still be paying them back 17 yrs later.

I was exaggerating slightly (or more than slightly). At the time, I don't think she qualified for FMLA because she didn't bring home a baby (while she had physical ramifications, she also took time off for emotional reasons), and she had to borrow (and she borrowed more than the 20 days, I know that much). Two years later, when she had my sister, she had to borrow MORE time because and she was "paying" it back for YEARS... as far as she told me. Which was one of the reasons why, at 17 years old, I was the primary person raising my sister. I want to say she said she was "paying it back" for about 10 years... between the two, but the biggest issue was the stillbirth of the twins, she did not qualify for any time (if I remember correctly) because there was no live baby brought home (it's VERY different today, from what I can tell).
ETA: It's entirely possible that my SM was telling me that to "guilt" me into watching my sister (which is a whole other story).

Re: Elementary School Teachers - Heroin
I didn't read through all the pages of responses so forgive me if this was already mentioned , but in my school the faculty bathrooms are used by many people...janitors, bus drivers, parent visitors, therapists from outside district, etc. Could've been anyone. With that said, I would gladly take a drug test to clear my name because I have nothing to hide.

The FLMA was passed in 1993 (President Clinton's first major legislative accomplishment). Given the dates you mentioned, she likely had to borrow the 12 weeks the FMLA gives you know as a matter of right.

That's probably what happened and because they were so financially tapped at the time it was borrowed and not unpaid.

Hahaha, the ways our minds work! There was a stream to it, it's just sort of buried now.

I don't even get the point of this post.
So a person can post a video of a dad taping kids falling, but a post about teachers refusing to take a drug test has no point? Some of the worlds DUMBEST debates take place on this board, but something that has to do with education has no point?
I only came back to this thread now, so I haven't read the many pages of replies, but THIS is what makes me believe you posted this for pot-stirring purposes only: "Since articles about teachers always gets a lot of points of views, I was wondering what everyone thinks about these teachers."

Elementary School Teachers - Heroin
If they started drug testing teachers the market may open up for us! Lol
But seriously, when I rise became a teacher many of my friends were experimenting with drugs. I cut all tie with those people 1. Because I wasn't into that scene and 2. I was afraid to lose my license to teach. I thought we could be tested and also feared being around them if they got into legal trouble.
I wonder how this situation will end.

This. Sadly, he did not get his wish this time...it seems like a genuine conversation asking why they would be advised not to test and people are saying what I also believe to be true..teachers should not be on any illegal substances while teaching...the idea of that is a travesty for sure..and you know what? I would agree to testing for illegal drugs..I have nothing to hide!

I did want a genuine conversation. If I wanted to stir the pot, there are many other teacher stories that I could post.

JessnBrian, your story about stepmom saddened me so much. Omg, that is so terribly unfair. I wish there was something they can do for her Fwiw I didn't think you guys were anti teacher in and of yourselves. I know that all of the articles I read on the issue seemed to suggest the needles belong to a teacher.

Yeah it was terribly depressing for her. She had to fight for EVERYTHING. And I have to be honest, the more I thought about it, the more I think I might combined the hospital bills she had with the time off (though that was a major issue). After reading the posts and thinking about it, it might have been the hospital stay that night or the night after (because she had some postpartum complications) that the hospital might not have been covered.... I'm not really sure now!
Thank god things are different now (even though the law was in place back then).
Yeah most of my family and almost all of my friends are educators... I was in school to become one but switched to healthcare management, so trust me when I say I have the highest respect and regard for teachers. They have some of the hardest jobs.

Please don't go there. Those people shouldn't be known as teachers first. Their first title should be sick, demented, abuser, sex offender, or pedophile. So many of these stories. Gross!

But I am sure I might get backlash from drug users that think teachers are entitled to do whatever they want on their recreational time. Sux for teachers out their that don't use and parents like me that would rather have them in the districts.

I couldn't read this whole thread, but this is my thought exactly.
I had to be drug-tested before I began my current job (not teaching but similar profession) and I would have no issues with it if it was requested again.
I know several teachers who are involved in lots of questionable activities, including drinking and driving.

I'd get tested weekly if they asked. I have nothing to hide. And, as I said, sadly many jobs would open up if they tested us.
However, with the state of education lately I can't say I blame those that use lol

Re: Elementary School Teachers - Heroin
What would happen if an employee went against the union and went and got drug tested anyway, just to prove innocence? I work in a SD but am not in the teachers union. There seem to be so many issues that the teachers union has and no one ever wants to go against the unions stance on things even if they personally disagree. In the elementary schools where I work any adult can use the bathrooms. They only have separate bathrooms for "boys" "girls" "men" & " "women". Any one who entered the building could have left drugs. It's absolutely disgusting. What if that person dropped it in the hallway and a child picked it up...
