Getting infant on schedule

Hi,

Dd will be 2 months this friday- I have been feeding her on demand- she generally has her last feeding between 8&9 and for the past two weeks will sleep through to about 4am, nurse for 30minutes and then go back to sleep for about 3 hours. She naps a lot during the day still. When did you get your Baby on a schedule? I return to work at the end of March- family will be watching her but I do want o start to establish aschedule - how did you do it? Thanks!

Getting infant on schedule

Ha! We are still not there. Everyday is different. Some days she's not hungry for her bottle yet, some days it's earlier. Some days she's not tired for her nap and goes down later.

I don't follow a strict schedule. As long as she gets fed, cleaned, changed and gets to rest during the day all is good.

I have a very roundabout routine as a guideline but definitely wasn't at 2 months.

Re: Getting infant on schedule

I was just going to post this exact question. I go back to work in the beginning of April and I was wondering if I should be starting to get ds on a schedule. He is still eating every two hours and I feed him at 11 when I go to bed and he usually only makes it 3 hours before wanting to eat again. I put him down to go to bed when I do at 11:30 and have been getting up late in the morning. I am kind of freaking out for when I go back to work.

We never put DS on a schedule. We just followed his cues - if he's hungry, he eats; tired he naps; otherwise, he plays. 2 months is really young and babies will change a million times. I think what you're doing is fine and working for you, so why try to change it?

You might want to follow a routine - Eat, Play, Sleep - just so your caregivers have a general sense of what to do "next." But again, as the baby gets older, everything changes. They stay awake more during the day and sleep longer stretches at night - but all this happens naturally. You don't have to do anything.

my DS sort of put himself on his own schedule around 4/5 months but sure enough he is almost 7 months and it's totally different now and completely threw me for a loop. i think the best thing you can do is follow their cues and see if there is any pattern but my experience so far has been that as soon as they become predictable, they change!

both of my DC have been on scheduels since birth. my dr recommended them being woken up every 2-3 hours during the day and letting them go as long as they can at night. (both my DC were in NICU and they also follow a schedule of feeding the babies every 3 hours even if they are sleeping they also do it in the middle of the night ) i stuck strictly to teh schedule for DD and now for DS and both of them were sleeping through the night by 8 weeks. DS i now 3 months and he now eats every 4 hours and get 5 bottles a day.

Never. I see no need for a schedule. We as adults are not on a strict schedule as to when we eat and sleep. We eat when we are hungry and sleep when we are tried. Why should a baby be any different.

Depends on what kind of a schedule you are talking about... If you are talking about a feeding/sleeping schedule, IMO it is best to follow their cues and create a schedule based on what they typically follow day to day. At 2 months I pretty much knew when she wanted to eat, wake, etc within a half hour by observing her day to day mannerisms and cues.
Not sure if I am the norm though.

I wouldn't try to do a formal schedule - its going to change a million times which will be super frustrating if you're trying to set something up. Just follow cues

Re: Getting infant on schedule

As others have said 2 months is very young. I've found that as soon as we get a good routine going it changes anyway due to growth spurt, teething etc.

DS2 is 4 months and each individual day is pretty predictable once he has his first bottle, but from day to day the times change.

I think you can at least get a rhythm going to tell the caregivers. Something like he eats about every 4 hours, and generally likes to nap about 2 hours after waking.

Good to know I'm not alone. DD is 5 months and we don't have any type of schedule happening. I just go with the flow Chat Icon
