Throwing Formula Out After an Hour
How important is this? Anyone wait two hours? I hate throwing out formula!

As long as it hasn't gotten hot I stretch it out a little bit. Think of it as a glass of milk for yourself. How long would you leave a glass of milk out and still drink it.
I also think the 1 hour thing is the formula companies covering their butts...knowing people would stretch it.

I dont think it is based on it sitting out per se... more that once the baby drinks from it bacteria can form and grow bc of backwash. If i mix formula and it sits out two hours before the baby touches it, im fine with that. If he drinks from it I try to keep to the 1 hr rule.

If DD started a bottle and didn't finish it all (left half or more) we put it in the fridge for later. We only threw it out if it was her last bottle before bed.

Throwing Formula Out After an Hour
Once my DS was older I def pushed it out much longer.
As a newborn I stuck to the rule.

Re: Throwing Formula Out After an Hour
DS1 - an hour no touch then I tossed. He turned out fine
DS2 - maybe 2 hours as long as the house is cool and it wasn't in the sun. He turned out fine

Re: Throwing Formula Out After an Hour
So should I refrigerate during that one to two hour span or just leave out in a cool place?

You can leave it out. It's not so much leaving it out or putting it in the fridge. Once it's been started it has to be thrown out 1-2 hours bc of bacteria from the babies saliva, regardless of fridge or left out.

Re: Throwing Formula Out After an Hour
I usually give it 2 hours because my DD is a grazer. She'll never finish the whole bottle but she'll usually go back to it. But I never let it go too much past 2 hours.
Of course if it was in the hot sun or something that would be different.

This. It depends how old the baby is.

Re: Throwing Formula Out After an Hour
It goes in the fridge for a few hours if unfinished...microbial growth is slowed in the fridge and my kids have never ever gotten sick.

Re: Throwing Formula Out After an Hour
I've left it in my nightstand and used it the next morning. I am on my fourth kid though so I let a lot more slide.

Nope my kid is a grazer. Would have been bankrupt if I stuck to the rule.

I toss it after an hour or so. I would not drink milk that was sitting out for that long.
Plus, formula smells extra funky to me once it's been sitting in a bottle for a bit, same with milk. I gag when I wash DS's sippy cup if he didn't finish and it was sitting out for awhile...I can't imagine drinking it yuck!

Re: Throwing Formula Out After an Hour
After he was a month old we disregarded the "rule". If there's more than 2 ounces left in the bottle we put it in the fridge and use it at the next feeding. Have not had any issues yet (he's 5 months now).

I stuck to the rule. After an hour, it went in the trash. I didn't want to take any risks.
