Re: Mom Arrested for Drinking While Breastfeeding
Depends which version is true - 2 beers with food not a big deal. Still wrong IMO but not as bad.
Multiple Long Island ice teas - should be arrested or spat least cut off from drinking.

Re: Mom Arrested for Drinking While Breastfeeding
Umm she doesn't give her baby formula bc she thinks it's less healthy than her breastmilk....but giving her baby alcohol is healthier and better than formula?!?!
ETA I also think it was an overreaction to arrest her, but I just find some of her comments strange and they don't make sense

TOAD SUCK?? lol
Authorities should have taken blood to determine how much alcohol was in her system. 2 beers in 90 min with food consumption theres not gonna be that much in her milk. Over reaction IMO.

Mom Arrested for Drinking While Breastfeeding
It is totally fine to BF and have 2 beers. If you can drive, you can nurse. I have a glass or two of wine all the time and nurse. My ped said it is fine and all LC's I have spoken with have said it is fine. Especially with a 6 month old baby. This is just absurd.

And THIS is the reason why breastfeeding needs to be normalized!! How can people be so ignorant on the topic and to the point where she was arrested?!? Our society really needs to be educated on breastfeeding without the drama of "mommy wars" or in a way that puts down moms who formula feed...but in a way where moms can breastfeed in public without worrying about being told to cover up, go to the bathroom, or being arrested for having a drink!

What stuck out to me was the mom was arrested and therefore separated from her EBF baby!

Exactly. What is the law on this? There is a law on Breastfeeding while Intoxicated? BWI?
And then why not arrest women who drink alcohol while pregnant? Or smoke while pregnant? Or eat a freaking ham sandwich while pregnant?

I thought that too.... and then I remembered how that would trigger the whole definitions debate. Can you charge a woman with endangering the welfare of a "child" when it's unborn.... don't know and not looking it up lol.
If she was downing multiple long island iced teas while caring for a child (breastfeeding or otherwise) imo she should have been cut off. Two beers? Ridiculous. Arrest? Also ridiculous.

Re: Mom Arrested for Drinking While Breastfeeding
I just read the comments on the thread and here is my thought….
I am of average weight and when I drink even one glass of wine (not a giant one mind you) I immediately get a buzz. The reason we get a buzz is because the liver cannot detoxify the alcohol fast enough, it sees it as a poison and tries to clear it from the body.
So why is it ok to breastfeed a baby while even having one drink, if the liver cannot detoxify the alcohol? Honest question. I guess the same goes for during pregnancy. Due to the above statement, I personally never would touch even one drink while pregnant, knowing that drinking alcohol is like putting poison in my body that my liver has to work to "clear".
I am not sure what my BAC would be after one glass of wine but I know I absolutely feel impaired, therefore my alcohol content must have increased in my bloodstream. So I just don't understand how it's a good idea to BF a baby with an increased BAC content. To me, if I feel impaired, that means there is alcohol in my system and while that may not harm a child, as the article says, there is no definite amt that can be stated as safe either.
Are there any states that state being drunk and BF while drunk are illegal?

I didn't read the article yet. I just read the comments on the thread and the only question I have is related to this….

I am not sure the reason this is considered safe and ok, can someone please explain it to me?
eta - finally read the article
Would it be considered "illegal" if she were legally "drunk" as per breathalyzer?
How you feel, and your BAC aren't always in-step. I get buzzed easily, and when I've used my personal breathalyzer, I barely registered in the meter, well below DWI levels. BAC can be calculated pretty accurately by body weight, time, and amount of alcohol. Feeling buzzed is subjective.

So what is giving the feeling, if it's not blood alcohol? It's definitely not in my head and I feel slightly impaired. I won't even drive having one drink because the alcohol has effected me.

Re: Mom Arrested for Drinking While Breastfeeding
This was a very helpful article. Still affirms to me I would not feel comfortable drinking even one drink while BF (as I also didn't feel comfortable drinking even one drink during pregnancy) as it says to wait 2 hrs after the alcohol consumption or when you feel neurologically normal.
Still curious now if any states state it's illegal to be legally drunk and BF? I have to google that. I recall some other story years ago that was similar…have to see if I can pull it up.

Re: Mom Arrested for Drinking While Breastfeeding
I think this was the story I was thinking of...http://www.parentdish.com/2009/04/29/north-dakota-mom-accused-of-breastfeeding-while-drunk/
"The case is raising all sorts of questions about alcohol and breastfeeding, specifically what amount of drinking constitutes child neglect. The La Leche League advises nursing mothers not to breastfeed while drunk, of course, but does not put a complete prohibition on drinking and nursing. According to their web site, it takes two to three hours for a serving of beer or wine to completely pass through the system of a 120 pound woman, so a glass of wine with dinner is fine, as long as mom times her drinking to fall between feedings.
But, the LLL adds, "The effects of alcohol on the breastfeeding baby are directly related to the amount the mother consumes." Because of this, some experts advise nursing moms to stay away from the hooch altogether. "No matter how little you drink," cautions lactation consultant Dee Grabanski, "you are potentially exposing your baby to alcohol." "

Re: Mom Arrested for Drinking While Breastfeeding
This is a really interesting home study. I dont have much research on it, but it's defninitely out there. Thomas Hale and Jack Newman are the people to read if you're interested in reseraching it more
Breast milk and alcohol study
There's really very little that can damage breastmilk. It's quite an amazing and resilient organism.
