when does hebrew school start? im so bad at this.

I want to say 1st grade I believe. I remember talking about that with someone. I always thought I'd have my boys go to my parent's synagogue, but now that DS2 goes to a Jewish preschool at another synagogue I love that one so torn. I have some more time though...

ok this is why i'm confused. some people are telling me 1st grade and some are telling me 3rd grade.

Most I know of start at Kindergarten. That being said, dd won't start until next fall when she is in first grade because we moved and weren't sure which synagogue we would joining. Hebrew school gets more intense at 3rd grade since bar/bat mitzvah is close. Some synagogues increase to two days a week at that pont.

We belong to a Conservative Synagogue. Religious school is "optional" for K-2. Both of my sons have done it and it was nice. They continued with what they had learned in pre-school and continued to learn about the Holidays, Shabbat, etc. Religious school starts in earnest in third grade, which in our Temple is twice a week.

Hebrew school starts around here at kindergarten but it is optional until 3rd grade. If you want your DC to become a bar mitzvah then they expect you to start at a minimum of 3rd grade.

Depending on the synagogue, you can start as early as pre-k or k. But when you want a bm date, you need to enroll in the school AND join as members usually in 3rd grade.

It's available before 3rd grade but not required by any means. My son, age 6, goes but it's not like they have assigned a Bar Mitzvah date or even gets graded there.

If you can start before 3rd grade, he will have an even better foundation JMO (speaking as a jewish professional): holidays, the aleph bet, songs, basic prayers, etc
I would also check w the synagogues you are interested in for their requirements.

thanks, but we don't really follow all that in our house. i just want to give him the opportunity to have a bar mitzvah if he wants one. i dropped out of hebrew school and never had one so i can't force him.
i plan to contact the temple in our area to get a better idea. thanks!

Depends on temple. Jacob started this year in 3rd grade. We go to DHJC and it is conservative.... Itmis 2x a week from 4:30-6:30 monday and wednesday..You could go before if you wanted but Not necessary....
Also there are extra requirements too. 5 family eds for the year and 13 points for services....
