what can i do about neighbors dog?!
our neighbors have a pitbull. its nasty, found out it actually bit someone once.
when we moved in the house had an old wood fence that could be seen through bc the pieces had separated so much over time and the dog used to follow us back and forth along the fence when we were in our backyard. used to try to dig under the fence.
we replaced the fence with a PVC once our daughter was born because we did not want to deal with this when we were outside with her. we just figured the dog couldnt see us thru it and would leave us alone....NOPE! it still follows us back and forth along the fence and barks and tries to jump. Ruins our entire time outside, my daughter at 4 years old is still terrified of the dog.
We even deal with this when we get out of our car in the driveway, as soon as it hears anyone pull up in the driveway or street the thing starts going crazy and tries to jump the fence (its a short chain link fence in their front so it sees everything and almost makes it over!) kids getting off the school bus and walking home get barked at constantly too.
my neighbors dont care, actually seem annoyed at us when we were outside yesterday bc WE were making the dog bark!
what can i do???

I honestly don't know if there's anything you can do. The only exception would maybe to file a noise complaint about the barking. And for the record, the fact that this dog is a Pitt is completely irreverent. Any breed, big or small can be aggressive.

pretty much what everyone tells me! i was just hoping someone had a similar experience and found something that worked! the only thing people told us to do is go outside every morning at 6am when my daughter wakes up and let their dog wake them up from all the barking and maybe they will start to bring it in!! they like to sleep late lol
and i know any breed can be nasty, my parents have a tiny dog that is the worst!!!

I agree with the pp. I would make sure you have pepper spray on hand when you're out in your yard in case the dog manages to get over the fence and charges you.

Unfortunetly, I dont think you can do anything about it, unless is past a certain time at night and the dog is barking, then maybe you can call the police and have the owners bring him inside.

I don't know if there is anything you can do other than maybe the noise complaint but I would call the town and look into it especially if the dog has bitten in the past.
I am sure you are already extra vigilant when near the chain link fence. This brings back a horrible experience for me. When I was about 7 years old there was a neighborhood dog that acted as you describe. It was a wire hair fox terrier. One day it made over the fence and attached me as I was walking home from the bus stop. I still have scars on my arms and legs and was deathly afraid of all dogs well into adulthood. I am still not at all comfortable with a dog that I don't know.

Is he more of guard dog? Is the dog outside all day and night? Because if the dog lives in the backyard than i believe that's illegal, and something can be done.

Re: what can i do about neighbors dog?!
You can call the town and complain. Most towns have a code enforcement section. I would complain while I know I'm going to be outside because you don't want to look like a liar when they show up and the dog is quiet.
If they keep the dog outside all day and night, I would try reporting them for neglect especially if the dog doesn't have adequate shelter, food, water. You can try contacting the Guardians of Rescue. I've seen on their fb page that they can get neglectful owners to surrender their dogs.

Re: what can i do about neighbors dog?!
NYC has an ordinance that a dog cannot bark continuously for more than 10 minutes. The owners are warned then fined if it continues, as it is a noise nuisance. Had to file a complaint against a neighbor who left his dog out for hours. The DEP agent heard the dog barking as I was on the phone with him, couldn't believe how loud it was. Told him my windows were closed, hang on a sec while I open them. The neighbor did not leave his dog outside after that.
Find out if your town has a similar noise ordinance.
The owners seem to be irresponsible - try the outside at 6am trick. Your other neighbors might get pissed, then they have to file noise complaints as well. I'd be outside ALL THE TIME making the dog bark if it annoys its owners. Maybe then they will actually do something about it.

The OP was probably just indicating the breed to give us an idea of the size of the dog and its ability to possibly hop over the fence. I'm sure if it was a Chihuahua it wouldn't be as frightening.

I would be outside ALL the time also! There is nothing more annoying than incessant barking! But, I would also go outside all the time so maybe the dog will get used to someone being there, and just eventually stop.

It's relevant when certain breeds like Pitt command more homeowners insurance or even an additional rider to their policy that they own a Pitt.
If I had a neighbor that had an angry Pitt, I would be very concerned if that dog was properly insured by that homeowner.

this is what i was thinking, but i believe if they provide adequate shelter you can't call aspca.... the town (at least brookhaven) has soooo many rules about coming out for pets even strays.

YUP. Unfortunately as long as there is some type of shelter their is nothing you can do.
I hate people that allow this. So inconsiderate to the neighbors and I would imagine stressful on the dog.

The breed is irreverent but this breed has massive powerful jaws that can kill with a bite. And this dog in particular has bit before.
I would complain to animal control if the dog gets loose. I don't think you can complain for aggressiveness within its own yard.
See if the neighbors would be receptive to you meeting the dog on the street or in your yard (off its territory). Maybe he wouldn't view you as a threat anymore.
Either way, I would have something on hand if the dog attacked.
I complained when my neighbors dog (also a pit) got loose all the time. He would jump on my front door and try to jump over my chain link to get into my yard. The dog seemed harmless enough that it just wanted to play, but with young children in my house, I was mad that they didn't take this more seriously. I think they finally got a ticket and they fixed their fence to be more secure. He still gets out every now and then, he is a determined dog.

Wtf?? You're a better person than me. I would've sprayed them with a hose. Lol. That takes some ballz, there are dogs on my floor that drive me crazy but I would never take matters into my own hands.
I mean I'm so grateful my dog isn't yappy because that would drive me crazy. But I'd rather address it as the owner then some stranger.

I"m not an expert by any means but what about a dog whistle? When it barks or jumps? Also what about SAFE NON TOXIC items planted by the fence (like lemon smells)?

The breed is irrelevant , and I'd like to know how anybody knows it's angry. My cocker spaniel would bark at leaves falling. My pretty pitie only makes a peep when she needs to go out. Not all dogs that bark are angry. They can be curious or excited.

Me too
I'd probably do the same thing, lol. And I'm a dog owner and lover but no dog is going to stop me from enjoying my backyard.
To the OP, although it doesn't sound like they're the most reasonable people, is there any way you can speak to the neighbors and tell them your daughter is very scared and try to work on a solution with them? Any chance they'd be willing to hear you out?

Whatever he is, he sounds *&^%$@# annoying . And it's the owners fault because they are being irresponsible. So whether he is curious or excited or a pitt or a maltese, he is frightening the OP and her child. I would definitely try calling in the noise complaint if you don't think the neighbors will be receptive.

My 4lb Yorkie is like this. He is scared if ants but if I leave the house or if the pizza man comes to deliver he starts growling and barking. It's because he is spoiled and wants to see what's going on and run out into the hallway.
The delivery guy said wow you have a mean dog or something to that effect that he is angry. And then when he saw my dog he started cracking up.
I can't believe people think it's ok to hose someone else's pet. That's crazy to me. I wouldn't hose someone else kid if they were annoying me,although I have hosed my own before.
OP, I would try talking to the neighbor because it sounds like there isn't anything you can do. Hopefully they can cooperate, and just come at them as nice as possible. Is the dog out all day in the yard?

Re: what can i do about neighbors dog?!
I don't see the big deal about hosing the dog. If your neighbors don't address the issue, I would do it. And complain about noise control to your town.
A pitt is scarier when barking than a little yorkie.
I like the idea of the plants or dog whistle that would maybe deter the dog from hanging out by you fence.
