Those with or had Gallbladder problems...

What kind of symptoms did you have when you had issues with your gallbladder? I have had weird pains in my upper right back/shoulder blade on and off for years. My drs have said it can be anything from reflux, to gallbladder, to a pulled muscle. I have had scans done in the past and it never showed anything... It is bugging me today and I am not sure what it is now...

Re: Gallbladder Symptoms.......

Honestly, aches and pains like that I personally think are pretty normal and I would not necessarily equate them to something like a gallbladder attack, especially if they've been going on for years.

If you are concerned though, set yourself up for a thorough physical and lab work with an internist.

Re: Gallbladder Symptoms.......

I have gallbladder issues. But the symptoms I have are also like the symptoms I have with a reflux attack. I am trying to find out if others have other symptoms with gallbladder issues. Radiating pain, pain when breathing. Is it constant or does it come and go? I am seeing a dr, but I don't feel like running over there with every "ache and pain"... As long as I am not in severe pain or have a fever, I will take the wait and see approach.

If it's gallbladder you'll be having the pains, plus major reflux. For me, I was turning 21 and waking up with such bad reflux that I was running to the bathroom to vomit when I woke up. I went to the doc, who had actually diagnosed my mom's gallstones, and she ordered a sono that afternoon. Big A$$ MF gallstones blocking my gallbladder. I had surgery 2 months later. That said, it took me vomiting every morning to go to the doc about it, I had been having pains and bad symptoms for about 1 year prior.

I only have pain under my right shoulder blade. And only when I breathe deeply or move the wrong way. And I always have reflux. I know I triggered an attack when I enjoyed some pizza over the weekend.. Never learn!!! I was nauseous yesterday but that is nothing new for m. I have tons of other stomach issues.. I woke up today feeling a little better. I am about to call the dr for an appointment... How was the surgery? I am worried most about that...

Re: Those with or had Gallbladder problems...

So I called my Dr to make an appointment to get looked at. The pain is gone now and my reflux is calming down... Almost everything I read says there is a lot of abdominal pain after eating. Usually within an hour or so. I didn't get that. It was 12 hours after I ate. I don't eat greasy foods often. And I didn't have anything like that over the weekend. I guess I will have to wait and see...

VERY EASY, and my surgery was complicated, hahahaha. They do it laproscopically these days (versus when my mom, aunt, grandma and grandfather had it) so they basically pump your abdomen full of air, go in through 3 little holes around your belly button and pull it out - I don't even have the scars anymore! Mine was complicated for a few reasons, one, they couldn't find the stones anymore, two they found some random scar tissue, and three, because I waited so long to see a doctor and have the surgery (remember I said I waited over a year to see someone) my gallbladder was insanely infected, so they had some trouble getting it out and had to make sure that my pancreas was OK. But again, i was FINE that night. I stayed over night, was given percs in the hospital, then released the next day and was told just to take OTC tylenol. The surgery was a Monday, Friday was Christmas Eve and I was eating like normal and celebrating with family, two weeks after my surgery I was back at shows with my friends who were in a band.

Granted I had literally just turned 21 when I had my surgery, and I'm sure it would be different now at 30. That said, MOST of my family have had this surgery, and all have had excellent results. Some things to think about, if you want to try to keep it at bay with diet, fried is bad, butter is bad, oil is bad, dairy is bad... All of those things after the surgery, you'll still be sensitive to in large amounts.

Re: Those with or had Gallbladder problems...

For me it was severe sharp pain right under my right rib cage and into my shoulder and back.
I also have vomiting when I had attacks.
The pain was BAD. Like really bad. Like can't function bad.

The stones showed up on a sono of my gallbladder in the ER.

ETA- the surgery was laproscopic and a breeze.
Home the same day.
Went out to dinner the next night.
Sore, but bearable.
I was 100% in a week.

Re: Those with or had Gallbladder problems...

Thanks for all of the information..
Today I woke up feeling fine... Go figure..

I don't get any severe pains. Just a pulled muscle type pain under the right shoulder blade. And my reflux was out of control. But that was probably triggered by something I ate on Sunday... The first time it happened was about 5-6 years ago. I was tested in the ER for gall stones and it was clear. BAD reflux. Blood work always comes back fine. I have had 3 sono's done and blood work and every thing always comes back ok... I had to call my dr today to let them know how I felt. If it happens again I have to go right to them or the ER for tests..

My hubby only had some indigestion and a little bit of pain in his abdomen when his went bad. My MIL had a lot of pain and vomiting with hers. No one in my family has history of it...

Those with or had Gallbladder problems...

I personally wouldn't wait, that is what I did, I had pain and I took the wait and see attitude....needless to say I had the open gallbladder surgery, because I waited too long, it was gangrene ...I was in the hospital for 5 days, so do it as an elective surgery, it would be a lot easier...Good Luck in your decision

Mine was almost to this point, that's why I had so many complications. They almost had to open me entirely, and I thank God that they didn't.

Most gallbaldder attacks are associted with fatty foods. I had my galbladder out when i was 24 and I associated my pain with McDonalds. Everytime I would go I would be in severe pain for 3 or 4 hours. If I stayed away from Mcdonalds I never had an attack. I had my laroscopically and had no issues

Depends on how infected and big the stones are. In my case, dry, steamed rice would cause an attack. Basically, I was constantly having attacks, and living on a diet of unsalted saltine crackers and practically nothing else.

Re: Those with or had Gallbladder problems...

I had pains in the middle of my rib cage, and not the side where my gall bladder was. I never had any pain in my shoulders or back.
Mine came on suddenly, I thought it was just cramps from my period to feeling like I had really bad heartburn and sharp pains. never had any issues before. Like I said mine came on so suddenly I had to go to the ER twice. They did a son to see if there were any gall stones or my appendix.
Next day I had a hyda scan done, went back into ER 2 days later, and the results showed it was diseased.
I am a good eater, so I dont know why my gall baldder became diseased.
It was working at less than 10%.

Any DR recommendations for suspected gall bladder issues? Dr ordered an ultrasound and that showed nothing but I still have the pain...how were your issues diagnosed?

I used Dr. Telem at Stony Brook. I would definitely recommend her. It was diagnosed with a sonogram. Good luck!

This only will detect of you have stones. A sono will not detect if it is diseased.
You would need a hida scan done to test for that.

Dr vosswinkel over at stonybrook is amazing! Absolutely loved him... Very down to earth and did a phenomenal job... I referred my mom to him as well for the surgery and she had an excellent outcome.

I was getting attacks that would last 7-8 hours. Most horrific pain ever experienced. Got sono... They found multiple stones so I sign me up for the surgery! Leading up to the surgery I was so paranoid of getting another attack... I can't imagine not getting the surgery and worrying when I'd be keeled over in pain again Chat Icon

Ask your dr to do a hida scan with cck. It's done to check the functioning of your gallbladder. In my case I have always had stomach issues. In December I ended up in the hospital and everything was ruled out except for most likely passing a gallstone. I never had one and the dr said I may never have one again. That being said, after the hida scan with cck I was told that my gallbladder is only functioning at 11%. The lowest it should be is 35%. Tomorrow I meet with the surgeon to determine if I will remove it.

Side note- I have had colonoscopies, endoscopies, bloodwork and ultrasounds. The hida scan with cck was the best indicator of a gallbladder issue.
