Constipation and formula in newborns
My ds 5 weeks old is having constipation issues...he usually poops ponce a day and it's almost a play dog consistency...he just went 5 days with out pooping and finally got relief today...I have an appointment tomorrow and my dr said we may have to switch his formula..he is currently on enfamil gent lease...ha any body has constipation issues and switched to a different formula? Just curious what formula you switched to and did it improve their constipation issue.

I had to switch DS 4 times when he was a newborn. Finally found relief in similac sensitive but to be honest newborns will for the most part go through this since their digestive system is not fully developed.

I agree with above poster. Most newborns have digestive difficulty first 3 months. My ped did say some formula is harder to digest (like enfamil infant) than others.

Nutramigen helped DS because it has a probiotic in it. You can also buy probiotics separately and add it to any formula.

We had this issue and instead of switching, the ped recommending introducing prune juice. We give DS 2 oz of prune juice mixed with formula. 1oz in morning and 1 oz in afternoon. Hasn't been an issue since.
One of his poopy diapers was hard, so we knew he was constipated and boy did he cry when he went that time.

We had to switch 4 times and he still had issues till he was 4 months
Q tip and Vaseline helped us a lot lol

I find that if I add a little bit extra water it helps him go.

I agree w everyone above, on all ideas, lol. Gerber good start gentle was better for us, and prune or pear (it's gentler; gerber makes it) juice helped too - 1 oz juice 1 oz water - once a day. (That takes care of the tad of extra water in the diet as the other poster mentioned).
