Toddler chronic constipation help
My 2 year old daughter has been having cronic constipation for months, we have seen various doctors in our practice and they all seem to take it very differently, some just brush it off to a toddler thing others take it more serious. Have any of you had your child see a specialist because of this and if so what kind of specialist would you go to???
My daughter drinks about 3-4oz of prune juice a day and takes 1-2 gummy fibers a day. I also give rasins every day she does drink alot of milk & water. Limited juice as she just does not like it. Of course shr is a typical toddler that is a picky eater and doesnt eat greens.
It is a constant battle, she usually goes once a day, but even with giving her prune juice, fiber and rasins she tends to have trouble very badly every week to a week in a half that she is screaming in pain, the poop is actually to big to come out and we have to help her.
Any suggestions? Anyone experience this? I cant see herin this pain anymore. I am trying to stay as natural with treatment as possible.. Thank you.

Toddler cronic constipation help
We went to see dr. Kessler recently bc DD has been chronically constipated since she was born. Like literally spends the entire day sitting on floor trying to go... I'm so happy we went to him!! He did a TON of blood work and we upped her miralax doseage. We also did four enemas (2 fleets and 2 mineral oil) and then she had a clear liquid diet for two days. It helped tremendously!!! This was a month ago and she's doing great! Let me know if you have any questions!

Re: Toddler chronic constipation help
My DD went through this for YEARS. Only thing that worked was Miralax daily. I was hesitant to use it but had no choice. Worked wonders. Finally took her off it when she was using the toilet regularly. Apparently it seemed the position of sitting on the toilet decreased her chances of holding it in. Now at 5 she still hates going #2, but does it daily on her own thankfully. It's so frustrating, I was there for many years.

I have heard great things that miralax helps but i am hesitant but i might be at the no choice. I have put my daughter on the potty to help it comes out a few times.

Re: Toddler chronic constipation help
My DD has been suffering from constipation since she was about 8 months old. It's definitely gotten worse recently and she is two. I attribute it getting worse to her toddler diet. She will eat fruit but she refuses all vegetables.
She has been getting prune juice everyday since she was about 6 months old. It helps but it's definitely not a cure. Pears and pear juice did nothing for DD. It may work for yours. It's definitely worth a try.
Have you tried prunes? Actual prunes? My mom watches DD a couple days a week and has started giving her a couple prunes a day (the mini ones). They are really helping her. I have given her Miralax on an as needed basis. If she hasn't gone in a couple of days I always give her a dose. I don't like to see her in pain. And if I can make it easier for her to go I will.
I have spoken with DD's ped on numerous occasions about the constipation and their answer is prune juice. They haven't been very helpful with this problem. I have thought about taking DD to a pediatric gastro but haven't done so yet. I'm worried how this will affect her when it comes time for potty training.
Hang in there. I know it's rough, especially when you see them in pain.

I was in the same boat. I would mention it to the dr. at her well visits and they would say to give prune juice, pears, lay off milk, etc... Finally they told me to give miralax but that still wasn't working as well as it should. I ultimately decided to take her to the GI dr. on my own b/c what our ped said was not helping at all. I'm so glad I did b/c the dr. said she was SO blocked up (like a softball sized amount was stuck). TMI - but they said she wasn't actually pooping, it was just leaking out around the blockage. I hope your DD feels better!!

This is very interesting because my daughter goes almost daily but seems to get blocked up (her biggest issue) sorry tmi, but the poop is way to big to come out.. we have to try to help it out and break pieces off. Its horrible to see her try to go and it cant physically come out. She is in a very bad spout right now, i just gave her maralax for the first time. I hope it will give her quick relief and I think I need to see a pediatric gi doc. If anyone else has recommendations on one, please share!

Re: Toddler chronic constipation help
My son was constipated from 6 months to 2 years. He would have a bowel movement once every 3 days and as he got older it got worse. He would only go once a week. When that started happening I took him to a pediatric gastro int he city. He saw Thomas Ciecierega from Wiel Cornell. He actually started a pediatric constipation clinic in the clinic. My son is 2 1/2 and is taking mirilax every day. He gave me good advice and I would recommend him.

Re: Toddler chronic constipation help
When my cousin was a toddler, she struggled with constipation for years. It was so bad she became impacted. Turned out she was lactose intolerant and it was causing the constipation. When a new pedi told her Mom to cut out dairy, she was a whole new kid. It took a couple of weeks for her system to get back on track. She was on liquid laxatives, ate fruit, drank apple juice... Nothing helped. She suffered for over 2 years with it. She would only drink milk. She ate fruit, eggs, pasta, chicken, and peas... When her system was back to normal her appetite picked up... She was ok with cheese and yogurt...

Re: Toddler chronic constipation help
our son was the same. AWFUL constipation from 2-2.5. NOTHING really helped until we potty trained at 3! Once he was trained (which took 2 days) he was changed! Turns out he was holding it in to avoid going in diapers
Miralax did help a bit but it was still really hard for him to go and when he did, he would pass BMs like baseballs!

Toddler chronic constipation help
Hey- any update? How's it going? We're in the same boat, but now my son is so afraid of poop pain that he withholds and makes it even worse! I was wondering if you found a doctor that you would recommend? (Ps we've been using senna for the constipation and it has helped tremendously). Now we just have to get toddler to want to go and not fear it !

Re: Toddler chronic constipation help
Just a thought ... my son had AWFUL constipation for MONTHS. We used miralax and it was helpful. At 3, we potty trained. He trained right away and never another issue with constipation. Not a single issue.
We spoke with our ped and she said that more than likely, he was withholding from going in the diaper. It was a sign that he was ready.
Could she be ready to train?

Hi, we ended up going the miralax route after speaking to the head dr at our practice. She really believed that is what the specialist was going to suggest to us. We would give a half of cap full at first then slowly started to wean her off, went to a quarter a capful, then quarter every other day. It took a long time. We still have to completely stay on top of it and if she goes more than a day without going I give her a little miralax. Daily I give her 2 fiber gummies and 4-5 ounces of prune juice. We also drastically limit milk, which I believe was the culprit. She only has about 10 ounces of milk a day. She was drinking more than double that before. Goodluck!

Re: Toddler chronic constipation help
If you don't want to go the miralax route, try eliminating dairy and wheat for six weeks. If theres no improvement, you can add it back in. It's worth a try!

Re: Toddler chronic constipation help
My DD also suffers from chronic constipation. The GI doc, and the specialist in her disorder said to use Miralax every day. Just so anybody else is on the fence about using it, it is not absorbed into the body...it stays in the GI tract, and draws water in, which softens the stool and makes it easier to go.
