Gas is def less. Oil will run you an average of 3.80-4+ a gallon depending on what kid of deal you make.
We just signed our contract to covert.

Re: gas vs oil
I've actually heard this too. Maybe oil is just more of an upfront cost? Not sure. We have gas now in our condo and our house will be oil. Let's just say I'm not thrilled about the switch. I really love gas for cooking and can't imagine going back to electric If I had the choice I'd probably convert to gas in the house.

Gas is way WAY less. I compare between our house & heating bills (gas) and our friends/family in comparable sized homes with oil and holy moly, I thank my lucky stars we ended up with gas and not oil. We're talking hundreds and hundreds difference from one to the other for the winter. And this was the highest our gas bills ever hit with this crazy winter. I had a convo w/ my BFF just this past Friday, and while her winter bills weren't what I expected to hear, it still amounted to about $750 for the winter than what we pay, probably closer to $1K.

Re: gas vs oil
Gas is generally less expensive than oil. However, the newer oil burners are much more efficient than the old ones. The issue is that many houses on LI still have old oil burners and they are very inefficient. For someone who upgrades to a new oil burner, oil bills would drop considerably compared to the old burner.
For many people, oil is still the only option as National Grid hasn't brought gas into all neighborhoods on LI yet.

That is probably why my friend's oil heating bill wasn't as much as I expected, her burner is fairly new.

Re: gas vs oil
I think the issue is that some people expect gas to be cheaper than it is. I have gas heat, and our gas bills can be up there (like $400) some winter months, and we have 3 zones of heat and don't keep the house excessively warm. It's not always that high, but you will still pay a lot for fuel, gas or oil, when you own a house.
Nevertheless, gas is still generally less costly than oil.
However, I think there are other reasons people prefer gas instead of oil, beyond cost effectiveness. For example, it's cleaner, and convenient in that you don't need to worry about it running out and getting deliveries. Also, you can then have gas cooking (which many people prefer) and a natural gas line bbq once you have gas in the house.

Re: gas vs oil
Based upon what my friends have told me they spent on oil and in comparison of what I spent on gas. Gas is the way to go.
