If you work in queens
I drive from Medford to Rego Park daily. I do have a Prius so I use the HOV lane. Once it ends in Littleneck it's HELL! Honestly, if I didn't have my car I could never do it from out this far. How far out on LI do you live?

Re: If you work in queens
I'm right on the border and mostly take the Northern State.
It's not bad at all. I don't take the LIE all that much because of trucks.
Several of my co-workers do but they also have a Prius so can go in HOV lane.
Honestly, most of the traffic I have found tends to be on the Wantagh, and over nothing really.
Just make sure you listen to the traffic report and you should be okay.

It's a slow go but pretty consistent once you get used to it and barring any bad weather or accidents...listening to the radio is a must...I tried to take southern state in the morning and found it worse...you always have the service road

I'm South of 110 and avoid the SS like the plague. My last job I had field work in Queens some days and hated that road.

A solid hour, maybe a couple of minutes longer. It's totally doable. I've also been doing it for YEARS so I'm used to it. But, in a storm...five hours!

If you work in queens
I just started commuting from Ronkonkoma to LIC on the LIE last week. HATE HATE HATE! Takes me 75-90 minutes in the morning and between 1.5-2.5 hours on the way home. It's only temporary for me, thank god. I can't deal with the traffic and I can't even imagine what it will be like once school is back in session.
Oh and I drive in the HOV lane for as long as I can and it only helps minimally.

Re: If you work in queens
I do. On some days I have to commute to Westchester
I try to adjust as much as possible and rarely leave before 9 am. Do you think your new job could be flexible with your work hours? Maybe you can negotiate coming in later and staying later to avoid the rush hour? Leaving my house around 9 in Smithtown, it takes me about 40-50 minutes to get to Whitestone/Flushing area... that's without the HOV lane. I can do a ton of work in the car as much of it is by phone.. blue tooth is amazing. So I'm really getting work accomplished on the drive in.
Getting home takes a bit longer.

Do you stay on the LIE or switch to the CIP? I used to commute to Rego Park and found that the CIP to Whitestone expwy, etc was quicker.

Well my school is right off the Horace Harding Expressway so for me the LIE makes the most sense. When I used to teach in Jackson Heights I would do the LIE to Cross Island to Whitestone Expressway to Astoria Blvd.
I would never think I could of the CIP to Whitestone Expressway to get to are Rego Park, how can I? I'm bad with directions. Once I know a route I stick with it. But I really need to know other ways should I run into trouble on the LIE.

Re: If you work in queens
I used to commute from Centereach to BK (not far from Elmhurst) and it was awful. Not so bad in the morning, but we left at 6 am and used the HOV lane. The way home is a total nightmare.

If you work in queens
My husband goes from Levittown to Woodside. He had to be at work at 7:45am. He leaves my house at 6 and gets to work between 7:15 & 7:30

If you work in queens
I go from Babylon go Queens (Rikers) - leave at 550am and am there by 7 (with HOV). If I leave after 6, I don't get to work until 730/8. Home - in the car by 3, home by 4/430 (with HOV). On days I don't carpool - in the car by 3, home by 430/5. It sucks, but I drive with 2 other people so I have company and can get some sleep if needed.

I also think it depends what time you get out of work in the PM.
My hours are 8:30 to 4:30 from that area. On average I'm pulling in to pick up DS in Seaford between 5 and 5:15.
Honestly, the most traffic is on Northern blvd getting to the highway and then going from the LIE onto the NS to the Wantagh due to volume.
I can count on one hand the times it was really bad (both am and PM) and it was either because of snow or a bad accident.
Obviously the further into Queens you go, the more it will add.
I was scared taking my job initially because I thought it would be hell, but like other posters said, you listen to the news, you learn your route and you get used to it.

Re: If you work in queens
I work in East Elmhurst and I am coming from Levittown. I take Northern State to Cross Island Without traffic 35 minutes. With traffic about an hour. I would avoid the LIE if I were you. I also use Waze and Google Maps to find the fastest route.
Good Luck!

If you work in queens
I go from Queens to Nassau in the morning so I go against traffic on the GCP, CIP and the LIE. The traffic on the LIE seems to move a lot faster going west than it does on the other two.
