starting solids - 4mo vs 6mo
with my oldest son, i started him on solids at 4 months old. looking back, i think it was WAYY too early for him & now knowing he has oral motor sensitivity issues, i wish i had waited until 6 months to start. i remember there always being a battle with food even as young as 7 months old. after receiving speech therapy & learning about his oral stuff, he is totally fine with food now
now my second son is 5 months old & i'm going to start next month with solids. wondering if i will see a difference between how the 2 of them eat
also wondering what others experience has been with starting their baby on food at 4 month or 6
TIA!

Re: starting solids - 4mo vs 6mo
We started DS on cereal at 4 months and he took to it so well. He loved it so we went with it. About 2 weeks later, we started trying stage one fruits/veggies (got the ok from our ped) but he wanted nothing to do with them. We waited until almost 6 months to try them again and the next time, he was ready. And ever since, for the most part, he likes the new foods we introduce.
Good luck!

Re: starting solids - 4mo vs 6mo
We started when we saw signs with DS - he would watch us eat and chew his food. He was about 4.5 month old, but he wasn't ready. We tried again a week or so later and he was great with it.
Every child is different, so I'd just wait until your child seems ready. If you try solids and it's too early, don't push it.

We started at 4 months and DS loved it. I would do the same all over again if I was blessed with a second LO, no question.

starting solids - 4mo vs 6mo
I started at close to 6 months. Initially tried at 4 months based on dr saying we could try, but dd wasnt ready. Now looking back I dont see what the rush is... I would personally wait for 6 months. Whats the difference? Whats the rush? If your child get everything they need from their breastmilk or formula then do what you feel is best for your child. =)

DS1 i started solids at 6 months. he was BF and i didn't feel he was super interested in food before then.
DS2 is only 3 months but i think i will wait until 6 months again. worked well for us the first time.

We started ds at 4 months and he loved it and we had no issues.
I don't think you an compare one kid to the next cause they are all different. Just start when you feel it's right.

I too had the thought of what's the rush?... Especially being the 2nd time around I'm so busy it's like I blinked & he was 5 months!!

Re: starting solids - 4mo vs 6mo
I tried tiny bites of banana and avocado thinned with breast milk at 6mos and she wasn't ready, it wasn't until about 7.5mos that she consistently ate solids. Now I can't stop her, she lovessss to eat!

Re: starting solids - 4mo vs 6mo
We started at 4 months and she was definitely ready. She had no tongue-thrust and took to it really well. I wanted to wait until 6 months, but she was nursing constantly and grabbing all of my food and mimicking us chewing. Now, she is 5 months old, and has a pincer grasp, and likes to hold the spoon and feed herself. I attribute it to her being born at 42 weeks, lol. I was so worried about starting to early, but my ped. told me that some babies are ready early and that she looks at each baby as an individual, their milestones, etc. to determine readiness and she saw the same readiness that I did.
We offered one meal a day for that month and now we offer two small meals, so that she is still primarily breastfeeding.

DD is 5 months and we aren't starting until at least 6 months. We will not be starting with cereal either. I'm leaning towards Baby Led Weaning. We're not in any rush to begin. Her doctor agreed.
She also still does the tongue-thrust.

Re: starting solids - 4mo vs 6mo
I tried at 4 months with DD and she was nowhere near ready. We officially started just after 6 months.
The AAP recommends starting solids at 6 months. I'd just follow LO's cues and start around the 6 month mark.

Re: starting solids - 4mo vs 6mo
AAP guideline is 6 months. Also, no need to start with cereal. We started with root vegetables :)
