"Formal Attire Required"?

On a wedding invitation - does that mean only a long gown for women and tux for men? (Sorry - I'm so clueless when it comes to this kind of thing)

ETA: It is OOS, in Florida, if that makes a difference

Yes. I would interpret it as tux for a man and a gown for a woman.

I would think Black Tie is tux and gown.

So I would just wear a very nice dress.

Maybe some people just need a little reminderChat Icon

Re: "Formal Attire Required"?

IMO

Formal = Suit/Tie for Men; very nice dress for ladies (long or short)

Black tie = tuxes and gowns.

If the wedding is in FL, then people totally need a reminder.

I have family all over the state and things are way casual compared to the Northeast.

I think a nice dress and a suit are perfectly fine.

I agree. FL seems like the type of place some people would think nothing of showing up in jeans and a sundress to a formal event.

FTR, I also feel here Black tie you can still get away with a formal dress and a dark suit and tie.

Re: "Formal Attire Required"?

Yeah its pretty ballsy to force someone to pay an add'l $150+ to rent a tux for the night.

Re: "Formal Attire Required"?

I would say that its a reminder to guests that jeans and a polo are not acceptable. We got married in a tent at a farm in upstate NY and were worried guests might assume they could dress more casual, so we put "formal attire required" on our wedding website as a reminder that it's still a wedding and please dress appropriately. So, my opinion would be that a suit and tie for the gents and a cocktail dress for the ladies would suffice.
