School district in other county than where you live.
Okay, so I live in East Massapequa in Nassau County. I pay Nassau taxes, Town of Oyster Bay taxes, and Amityville School taxes (which is Suffolk County).
Got it? Good.
Okay, so for summer recreation, I have to send kids to Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, where they don't know anyone, because I can't do the Town of Babylon (in Suffolk) summer recreation (where they would know kids).
Talk about stupid. Just have your school district in your county. Sheesh.
Wait, anyone have there school district in a different town? Say you live in the Town of Oyster Bay, but your school is in the Town of Hempstead. Is that possible? or Visa-Versa?

Welcome to Long Island, the most segregated and divided school district system in the nation. Nowhere else can you find a home within walking distance to a school building whose children must be bused to a school far away because of racial makeup and outright discrimination. Sickening.

Re: School district in other county than where you live.
It's annoying but not unusual. I live in Putnam county and it's very small. Some districts/areas overlap with Westchester and some with Duchess. There is a town north of me that has no school district. It's also crazy in terms of how the district lines are drawn, and then when you look at the different services, rec departments, special districts, etc your head will spin!
Also, I forget which towns do this but I had a job writing town profiles a couple years ago, and I learned that there are some kids who actually have to be bussed across the Hudson River to go to school. I should see if I can find the specifics.

From what I have learned from living in this area too (although we are in Suffolk) this was purposely set up this way in that district and it had to do with the racial make up of the areas.
As an aside, many towns where I grew up are like this (Hudson Valley). I don't think it's a race thing but there are kids who live in NJ who go to school in either PA or NY due to lack of schools.

I grew up in Commack and half the town is Town of Smithtown and half is Town of Hempstead. When the Girl Scouts held events at Hoyt Farm, only half of the girls' families could get into the parking lots. And we had separate libraries (Commack Public Library and Town of Smithtown - Commack Branch).

It was set up this way for the purpose of keeping towns uniformly homogeneous in the 1950's and 60's
Lakeview is just one example. North Merrick/Uniondale is another. Here is an article: http://www.longislandpress.com/2014/05/17/long-island-segregation-drives-educational-inequality-60-years-after-brown-v-boe/

Thanks everyone. I came MN, and this school district stuff is just weird. I can see that all school districts here apparently aren't equal. The wealthier the district the more perks there are, and the poor districts, such as mine, don't even have enough Math Books for the students. The teacher makes copies for kids.
Although, the more I think about it, this probably happens across the whole country.
