Speech delay question - please don't move
Hi there, I am posting here instead of the Children with Special Needs boards because of more traffic. I am just wondering if anyone here has or knows of a child who had a profound speech delay at age 2 not due to ASD, who eventually went on to talk. My son has a global developmental delay and mild cerebral palsy. ASD has been ruled out, but such a profound speech delay is uncommon with mild cp so we are back to global delay. Just looking for stories of hope, many of the research is directed at kids with asd which isn't applicable to our situation. Thanks in advance of you can share any stories of kids who were delayed and caught up.

Re: Speech delay question - please don't move
My son said very little when he turned 2. He only had about 5 words. He understood us, but never spoke.
He was evaluated and qualified for speech therapy. He had the speech of a ten month old. He received speech for about 4 months, during which he acquired about 70 words!!
He didn't need speech anymore, and his language really took off. He is now 4, and speaks just like his peers.
It was an Isolated delay, some kids just need more help!!

Re: Speech delay question - please don't move
I've worked with a ton of kids with profound speech and global delays that went on to talk/ walk etc... It's amazing how much progress they can make within a few years time.

Thank you! We have been in EI for 18 months. He only started walking at 2 and now few months later he walks so well you wouldn't necessarily know that he even had CP. Hopefully it's the same story with speech :)

Re: Speech delay question - please don't move
When my son turned 3 earlier this year, he only had about 15 words, on a good day. He wasn't delayed in any other area (and so he wound up not qualifying through Nassau county for EI). But a month or two after he turned 3, all of a sudden the words just started coming out!
We just moved so I am still going to try and get him services through the school district but I think he's well on his way to catching up.
Good luck!

My niece had no words at 2.. she would just point and make sounds if she wanted something. She started speech through EI then.. She is now 4 and is talking up a storm!
