Have you brought DC to CSE or 504 meeting

I received a letter about DD's 504 meeting, and it said to bring DD, if appropriate. I don't know whether or not I should. I have, in the past, brought my younger DD to the CPSE meetings for her because it was recommended to do that so the committee could "know" who they were making a decision about, rather than just reading dry reports and it not being about a "child". But with this DD's 504, all invited to the meeting do know her already. Also don't know how much I really want her to hear/know. Just wondering if anybody else has brought their DC.

Every High School CSE/504 meeting I've attended, the student was present. At some Middle School meetings the student was present (depending on the maturity level of the student, if the student was able to be an active member and participate in the meeting). I have never been to a meeting where a "K" through 5th Grade student has been present. 1) the meetings are held during the school day so the students are in class 2) we discuss areas of weakness that the student has (low IQ scores, behaviors, poor working memory etc...). Most people would feel very uncomfortable discussing such things with the student present.

For me, once a child starts middle school I would start bringing them. They need to start learning to advocate for themselves as parents have much less communication in those grades.

Until then, I would not be bringing her because I do not feel comfortable discussing her deficits in front of her and there is alot of going back in forth with placements and frequencies, etc. Also, I need to be 100% focused on the meeting and having DD there I would not be. Everyone in the special ed department, from teachers all the way up to the superintendent know my DD though so they all have a pretty good idea of who she is.

I never bought my son. Didn't even cross my mind to discuss his weaknesses and struggles in front of him. That changes in high school though. They are requested to be there. I wouldn't bring a younger child.

Thanks ladies. That's kind of how I felt too, just wasn't sure what other moms do.

In my district, I believe they start having the child involved in the meeting starting in middle school. Until that happens, I would not bring him to the meeting. I am not sure how aware he is of his differences, but he is not going to hear me discussing his deficiencies and challenges at a young age.

I work in a middle school and we usually start including them for at least part of their meetings at 7th grade. It can be uncomfortable to hear some frank discussions earlier than that.
