Pumping and jury duty
I got a jury duty summons, I have to start calling today to report Monday. Anyone know if the courts have a lactation room where I can pump during the day?
This is for Suffolk County.
TIA

I thought being a nursing mom was a reason to be excused?

Pumping and jury duty
It isn't a set reason to get excused, but they'll likely excuse you bc they don't want to deal with you. Just bring it up during questioning and I'm certain you'll be let go.

Pumping and jury duty
I got called to serve in Brooklyn (lived in west babylon) when my DD was 5 mo old and was EBF. I sent a letter explaining it was an "undue hardship" or whatever terminology they used, since I'd have to pump 3-5 times depending on how long I was gone. I got a letter back a few days later, saying I was excused. Since you have to report Monday, I would just request a lactation room during questioning.

Pumping and jury duty
Hopefully you won't even have to go and will just have to call each day - next week will be a very slow week in the courts.

Re: Pumping and jury duty
i had to go in queens and i pumped in an empty room that the court officer locked for me 3 times that day. i was called in for a case and told the judge i was pumping and he dismissed me. i forget what he said exactly, but he mentioned something about the case being related to a new mother, so i think i would have been excused anyway.

Re: Pumping and jury duty
This happened to me a few months ago. I told the women at the front desk when I first got there. They wont excuse you just for having to pump and I wound up having to leave to pump in my car. Then once I was actually called in for questioning I told the attorneys and they excused me.

Actually it's not, one of my friends works in the courts. She is friends with one of the judges and had a concern about her son but to make a long story short the judge told her these "summonses" really hold no legal weight because there is no way to prove you ever received it, they aren't sent certified mail or anything like that, and they never follow up with people who don't report. I have another friend who was called about 6 months ago, something happened and she couldn't make it but nothing happened. This is suffolk county just to be clear, I have no clue what Nassau does

I would go and tell them you'll need pumping breaks every 2-3 hours or youll be pumping in the courtroom. They'll send you on your way most likely haha

Just tell them that you are EBF. I know you have to call but a few years ago I wrote that in my letter and I was excused.

People have been fined and jailed for just not showing up.
Def not a good idea.

How could they fine/jail you if the notice gets lost in the mail and you never received it?

Exactly. They put that fine/jail time thing on there to scare you into showing up, but in reality you can say your mail never came, it was stolen from your box, it got delivered to the wrong address...etc. To be honest, I have plenty of instances where I don't get my mail. Unless they start sending summones certified mail with a signature required, I can't see it being enforceable.

Re: Pumping and jury duty
After my SIL moved to Queens from Suffolk, my MIL kept throwing out her summonses and after a couple years there was a warrant out for my SIL's arrest. She had to go down to the court to prove that she lived in Queens.

Yikes, I guess if you ignore multiple summonses then it could be. Either way I think you will be fine this week probably won't get called
