Want to get rid of mice?

In case anyone else has mice in their house that they want to get rid of, I want to let them know that electronic mouse catchers that use D batteries really do work. I've gotten five so far in mine in three days (last year I got eleven all season). Tonight I was surprised to find I had not one, but two dead mice in it.

I don't want to see or handle mice, and usually call DH to get them out of the device, but I am getting braver this year. I look for the red flashing light that indicates a "Kill", then peek inside enough to check that there really is a mouse in it, then rush outside with it and toss the contents in the bushes.

I have been using the Ratzapper brand and baiting it with 1/2 tsp of peanut butter put on a small piece of cardboard - dry pet food, whole peanuts, and sunflower seeds didn't work. I just bought another brand called Raticator and will be putting that one out tomorrow too. I read that it was a good idea to put a damp cloth or paper towel in front of the electronic traps so that the mouse gets it paws wet before it enters, so I have been doing that.

Frankly, I don't like killing creatures, but I've had it with mice scurrying in the ceilings, gnawing inside walls and eating my dry foods. I don't want poison baits around and glue traps are horrible as the creatures starve to death. I have helped released two mice from them because I couldn't bear to see the critters struggle - it wasn't easy to do either, as lots of fur comes off.

I can attest that electronic traps work very efficiently. Zap, and the mouse is dead. I had hesitated to buy one because I wasn't sure they would work and they are fairly expensive. They do work, just take the time to bait them with something with an enticing smell and put them where mice travel. A damp cloth is a good idea too.

Are you in a very wooded area?

I would call in a exterminator.

Yikes, that's a lot of mice. I'd call a contractor to come find the hole. They are getting in from somewhere!

I live out in the country in an antique house surrounded by fields. Mice can get in 1/4" holes and can climb up the sides of shingle or brick houses to access points, so it is a battle. Google for pictures of mice doing it.

An exterminator was not successful and I was not happy with all of the poison he was using. So, I moved to electronic mousetraps. And they are working! No pitter pattering heard lately!
