Already stressing about CPSE Process

My DS is in EI still but I am already stressing out about the CPSE process. My DS is at Little Village for now through EI and its been a great program. I was hoping to have him stay there for the pre-k program in September but I was just told that he is not guaranteed a spot until I get the CPSE eligibility letter. I was told by my service coordinator to get him registered with the school district now, but that I wouldn't be able to hand in CPSE paperwork to get the eval process started until March 1st, since DS has a summer birthday. By the time he is evaluated I am afraid that the spots there would already be taken up since I know it's a school that is hard to get a spot. The process also seems kind of overwhelming.

I guess I just needed to vent!

ETA does anyone also have other recommendations for other good special needs pre-k's should DS not get into Little Village? I know I was told I have to send an application of sorts if approved to a few different schools.

How old is your son? My sone is 2.5, birthday in June, and i have already done all his evals...all paperwork has been submitted to the district and I was told I should hear back soon for a meeting. Some ppl caution not to do it too early bC they make ask for more recent evals but I was told 6 months is fine. Like your son my son is definitely getting a center based program and I have the same concerns! Good luck.

Already stressing about CPSE Process

My DD will be 3 in April and I just registered her with the district. How long do you think it will be to hear from them?

Already stressing about CPSE Process

what type of delays does your DS have? my son was in EI in LVS. he didn't get a spot in the CPSE program there. And we did our CPSE evals practically the day he started the EI program because you could do them starting in sept. for the following sept back then. i think its changed though. we looked at barbara c wilson, boces ECC in levittown (which i think moved over to Boces jerusalem ave.) SLCD, marcus ave.... we ended up using Boces ECC... he was mainly a speech delay, so the larger class size was good for social interaction for him. was very happy there. not sure what they did with the program exactly, if it moved, or got absorbed into the existing program at jerusalem ave.

Re: Already stressing about CPSE Process

last year, my son was in EI and was evaluated by the district in March 2014. We had his CPSE meeting in early April and at that meeting he was approved for a school-based program. I reserved my spot with the school the same day as at the meeting they were able to arrange a tour of the school the same day as my meeting and I liked what I saw. I would think you would probably be okay. Most of these schools have to save a certain amount of spots for CPSE kids and most of the meetings are not until the spring anyway. Once he is approved, I would make a decision fairly quickly, but I don't think I would worry too much about their not being a spot for him.

Thanks all. DS will be turning 3 in August, so I guess that is why I have to wait until March 1st to hand in the paperwork. It would be nice if LV held a spot for him but they keep telling me its not guaranteed. It also helps to know about other schools so thanks for the suggestions.

ETA as far as his delays, he was diagnosed with ASD and is non verbal, currently gets ABA each morning, and speech 2x a week, I'm supposed to be getting OT 2x a week added as well but apparently the school doesn't have any OT's available right now, and will be starting 1 session of PT/week for a slight delay.

Double check the dates on this. We were in exactly the same spot because my son has a fall birthday. I thought the cutoff was September 1st though - so if your birthday was after 9/1 you had to wait until 3/1 to submit the paperwork and get the evals going. We were not guaranteed a full day spot in a preschool program. Get whatever you need in order now because it's going to be hard to get a full day spot anywhere.

I called places I was interested and asked them if I could come in for a tour before my meeting, so I could see the facilities. Every one of them let me do it and it definitely helped me figure out where I wanted the district to send my packet. I am not going to lie, it was very stressful and the later you have your meeting (we didn't end up getting a meeting until the first week of June) the harder it will be to get a spot. Stay on top of everyone to move things along. Our meeting was so late, that the district sent our packet to a bunch of places we didn't request and even to places that were not the class size that was recommended. Don't let them push you into the wrong placement, but as my EI provider told me, if they find you a full day spot, they will expect you to take it.

What size class is he in now?

Ok thanks so much! I really appreciate hearing this info from someone that has gone through it. My service coordinator told me about the 3/1 date but I will double check. I just called to register him for the school district and they had no idea what I was talking about, and transferred me to the special ed office, the secretary took my info down and said she'd be mailing me paperwork. Right now he's in a classroom where there are 8 students, 1 main teacher, and 7 aides. It is a full day program. Out of curiosity which schools did you visit and what were your thoughts? You can FM if you want. Thanks!

My twins turned 3 Oct. We had our meeting over summer. (July) we transitioned early & started new program CPSE on Sept 1. Call your district yourself.

The reason I said to check the dates is that for fall birthdays, you can keep them in EI until December if you choose to. In our case, I was not happy with the choices of placement, so we kept him in EI until December and after that decision was made, a full day spot opened up for him at the school he was already at. I think the way it works is if the birthday is after September 1st, they don't schedule meetings until after March 1st, but I might be wrong. We were much later than the cutoff, so I didn't pay that much attention to it. If that is the case and your DC turns 3 before 9/1, you should be able to schedule a meeting sooner than March.

Thank you! I did speak with the CPSE office yesterday and they did confirm the March 1st date. According to EI he will age out as of September 1st because his birthday is mid-August. The CPSE told me to call back the end of February to start the process since they have to wait until he is 2.5 to do anything. I am going to call a little bit earlier just in case since technically, he does turn 2.5 in mid-February.
