Boys vs girls

My twins qualified for a program through CPSE. We went to check out a school yesterday and there were multiple classrooms. I noticed in each room about 80% of the classes are all boys. I have 2 boys. Just got me thinking. Do boys tend to have more issues?

I don't think that they have more issues but girls just present differently and it is not caught early most of the time. Having a girl with high functioning autism was extremely hard in the early years as there were no other girls in her class. Playskills were very difficult because they favored more "boy" games and she had no idea how to interact with other girls. I could go on and on but I personally find having a girl on the spectrum is very difficult and many of our early teachers did not know what to do with her because she presented much differently than her boy peers.

Gotcha. That makes sense. I agree. They present differently. That's what I meant to say. Not that boys have more issues than girls or vice versa. I actually wish there were more girls for them to play with in their school.

I wish that too : ) She actually never had any girls in her class until this year in 2nd grade when we finally mainstreamed her. We are still searching for social skills classes but most do not cater to girls.

I live in Queens. They will be attending Positive Beginnings school. We really didn't have any choice as there weren't any spots available in any schools so late in the year for the 2 of them. They will be in separate classrooms and we wanted them in the same school so they would be bused together.

That's great they are still able to go together. It's so hard this time of year.

My son has ASD but I know ASD is more prevalent in boys than girls. In his EI class, there are all boys.

Yes, boys do tend to have more issues. More boys than girls are diagnosed with ASD, adhd, oppositional defiant disorder for example.

Re: Boys vs girls

According to Dr Amy Yasko it has to do with more genetic mutations on the X chromosome. Girls get a little more slack since they have two. However, it is also said that girls present differently and tend to have compensatory skills that can help 'symptoms' not be as overt

In my work with children, even in a relatively small size, I've noticed that developmental disorders are much ,much more common in boys.
