Does your furniture match exactly?
I bought a DR table years ago, but there was no room for a china cabinet. Now we're moving and will definitely need one or a buffet. I don't know if Raymour and Flannigan even carries my table anymore, let alone the corresponding pieces. What are the interior design rules for this? Does a table have to match the china cabinet/buffet exactly?

I don't think so and it seems a mix and match look is more on-trend these days. You are seeing a lot of kitchens for example with 2 different colors of cabinets for wall vs. island.
I would just say either purposely contrast or match exactly. You don't want to look like you tried to match but failed.
I would also consider the overall style of the piece, not just the color. for example, both should be traditional with straight lines or both be country/modern, etc.
Without knowing the color of your table, I would say you could go with something black or white as a neutral.

Yes and no. I bought my DR table from R&F too but I didn't like the china cabinet it came with so I bought a china cabinet from a different set but you'd never know they aren't matching. Have you checked the R&F website? You can see if they still have your table and the matching china cabinet. I know they still have my DR table set that I bought in 2010 so they might still carry it.

No such luck. I may have checked the site at work today. There are tables sort of similar to mine, but not the same model.

My table is cherry, I think. It's a dark red-brown. Would white look funny?

Nope. My dining room table is from world market and they China cabinet is from home goods. I'm not a matchy person and love the way it looks.

I think you can mix it up. I'm a big fan of that. I have to buy a dining room table soon (I didn't have a dining room in my last house). I'm not sure if we'll have room for buffet, too, but if we do, I'd like to go with a painted accent piece rather than something from the same collection.

My DR is vintage - it was my mom's. The table and chairs are teak and the sideboard is off white wood.
