Re: wood tile in basement?
I would recommend doing radiant heat if you are doing tile. Our basement floor is so cold. It was already finished when we bought but I wish it wasn't because I would definitely want radiant heat.

unfortunately we can't do radiant heat. Just out of our budget and we're already over budget as it is.

I think I would go with regular wood then because our tile floor is so cold down there.

honestly, if you're going to go with tile, I think doing ceramic is alot better- IMO, nothing compares to real hardwood, and it's noticeable- I would do ceramic or porcelein tile, as that is best for basements. If that's too pricey, then do a ceramic looking vinyl or laminate tile- The ceramic vinyl and laminate looks more "real" than the hardwood looking tiles
All that said, it's your basement and you have to love it- do what you like :)

Re: wood tile in basement?
You can order a ton of free tile samples from the build direct website. This way you can see and feel the tile, look at it in you basement...

well i definitely don't want to do carpet in the basement because if there's a leak or anything, then the whole entire thing has to be ripped up and replaced.
So seems like tile would be the way to go.

Re: wood tile in basement?
We did wood look vinyl. We didn't want the added height of tile, nor the cold feeling (plus we were looking to avoid water/moisture issues.)
Excuse the mess, but you the get the idea :

You can't see the image? Hmmm.

Re: wood tile in basement?
We just put wood tile in our den which sits on a slab part of our house. I love it. It looks really nice and people can't believe it's not real wood...until they touch it. It's very cold. At my former house we did a word laminate. That was a nice, cheaper alternative to hard wood.

Re: wood tile in basement?
My brother has a two bedroom basement apartment in my parents house - outside entrance, a big master with his/hers closets, a laundry room, a big bathroom and a huge kitchen. He has been living there since he got hurt so that if he needs a little help, my parents are upstairs.
But it was always carpeted - recently, with all that rain we had in the Fall, some water got in. What a pain in the neck with carpet! And it's a big area - like I said above, the apartment is bigger than my ranch So, he said to hell with this and had the carpet ripped up and did a ceramic tile that looks like wood - they make them now and they look beautiful. He wanted to not have to worry about if he ever gets some water down there again. With the tile, you can just shop-vac it up and mop dry. Easy. Before, with carpet or with real wood - it's always a problem and basements can flood so you have to kind of worry about that.
The nice part about the ceramic tile that looks like wood is that the look is clean, sharp and homey -- and he put down some nice area rugs.
I will have to dig up a pic - he took one when it was done being installed. The floor is so nice. I'm super jealous. I did Armstrong laminate in my house - brazilian cherry - and I love them but the tile is even easier to clean and so durable. I kind of wish I had done that but the ceramic tile wood look was only JUST coming out and not that well known and available yet!
ETA - He sent me one pic he took with the camera phone, not the best pic but it'll give you an idea...

hmmm - that's a good question.
the tile guy, my dad's friend who is right off the boat from ireland, he did it.
i just called my mom and she said that the cement on the basement floor was in great shape when they ripped the carpet up but Noel did still do like a skim coat and got everything perfectly leveled and then went ahead and did the grout and cement.

Tile will need a even surface! So if your floor isn't level yes you will need to add leveling compound to the price.
