Ladies that have been induced

I am scheduled to be induced on Wed bc I am late and only 2 cm dilated. What exactly happens and am I in for a long and painful labor? I am so nervous.

Ladies that have been induced

I can't speak as to what happens when you are already that far along and already dilated, I was induced at 35&1/2 weeks and they spent 3 days attempting to induce me. I had cytotec, cevedril and then a balloon catheter (which is exactly what you would imagine it is) after which I was given Pitocen and then an epidural. I never dilated further than 4 & 1/2 - 5 cm. I ended up needing a c-section bc DS ended up in distress, which was mainly because he was so early. I sincerely doubt you'll need all of that, likely you'll just get pit since you are already dilated some. My BFF ended up with pit and was just fine.

Wow, 3 days is a long time. Hopefully it's faster than that. I guess in the end, all that matters is a beautiful healthy baby. Chat Icon

Re: Ladies that have been induced

When I got induced I was 1cm. I got to the hospital around 4pm and was given the Cervidil around 6pm. I started contracting on my own with the cervidil a few hours later. I won't lie, I was in serious pain. My contractions were right on top of each other. My OB took the cervidil out after 8 or 10 hours, usually they keep it in for 12hrs. By the morning I still was 1cm and the babies hb was up and down they thought the cord could be around his neck. I had the choice of starting pitocin or having a c-section. I felt the C-Section was better because if the baby was in distress I wanted to get him out asap. Turns out the little trouble-maker was squeezing the umbilical cord (he came out with the cord in his hand) which made his heart rate go up and down.

ETA: If I didn't have a c-section my OB said I could have been in labor for 2-3 days at the rate I was progressing.

Hopefully your induction goes smoothly. Sending easy labor vibes to you Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

That was basically what happened with DS... except I still don't know what he was doing with the cord. That is so cute that he was holding his cord, scary and dangerous, but so cute!

I'll be very honest, my recovery seems to have been so much easier than just about every friend of mine's vaginal delivery. I was ready for BDing immediately but I knew I had to wait, and once I got clearance I was right at it.

Mine was similar. I was medically induced due to low fluid at 38w4d. I had 2 rounds of cervidil, 2 rounds of pitocin, 3 balloon catheter attempts, they broke my water, stripped my membranes all in a 65 hour period. Luckily I was able to deliver vaginally about 5 hours after getting the epidural. I'm hoping to go naturally this time around bc I don't think I could go through that again. It was awful.

Re: Ladies that have been induced

There's no cookie cutter induction. Everyone responds to meds differently and so does every baby.

I had a successful induction at 40w2d. Got to the hospital 7am. I was a fingertip dilated and 90% effaced. Started pitocin 930am ish. Was at 4cm by 215pm and got an epidural. 715pm still at 4cm, dr manually broke water. 915pm a 7cm. 1030pm fully dilated and started to push. Less than an hour later dd was here.

I went through this my first induction...it was Hell.

2nd induction I was 41 weeks and it went smooth...except I took the pain drugs too late and felt a lot of the contractions.

3rd time was really quick I'd say it was my easiest.

Re: Ladies that have been induced

it really depends on the person. Everyone has a different reaction to induction. Mine hit me hard, i wasnt dilated at all and i went into labor with in 4hrs of getting Cervadil. Once the contractions started it was about 4hrs before i got the epi, and then once it wore off i was ready to push. She was born 12hrs after they put the Cervadil in.

Re: Ladies that have been induced

ITA with the others that everyone is different... I was induced because my water broke. They inserted cervadil at around 930-10pm to help dilate me since I wasn't dilated at all.. that helped to start contractions so I did not need pitocin. They finally gave me an epi at around 3am I would say... At around 9am I was ready to push and DS was born almost an hour later.

ETA I will not lie, my contractions were very painful, I was practically begging for the epi but they wouldn't give it to me until I was at least 4cm.

Ladies that have been induced

Everyone is different. If they offer it, get the epidural early. Had a long labir, mine was painful since I had back labor. Good luck.

Re: Ladies that have been induced

Thanks so much everyone! The unknown is just so scary to me. I am not good with pain so this is stressing me. It seems from all of the stories, it could range from 12 hours to a couple of days. Hopefully I will dilate more by wed night. I guess I have to stop thinking about it bc it's out of my control.

I was induced at 7pm on a tues with cervadil and dd was born 5:15pm the next day. cervadil kicked in quickly and my water broke on its own within about 4 hours but I wasn't fully dilated until 4 pm the next day!! it was a slow process but the epi completely numbed me after my first initital contractions that night all the way up until it was time to push. the would refill the epi every 5 hours or so. good luck!!

How late are you? Some women go to nearly 43 weeks! I personally wouldn't induce unless it was medically necessary just because I was late.

FWIW, I do not deal well with pain at all. Contractions weren't horrible until I got more dilated. I went 60 hours without an epi. I did have pain while on cervidil and they gave me stadol which was lovely. The worst part, and I mean worse than pushing or contractions, were the balloon catheter attempts. I screamed bloody murder for those. But if you are already 2-3cm, they'll probably skip that since it doesn't work beyond 3cm.

Re: Ladies that have been induced

My first induction was at 41weeks and I started at 11pm with cervadil. By 4am I felt like I was in labor. By 6 am I had the epi. By 10 am I was ready to push. I pushed dd out in 45 mins. For me it was great. I had zero issues.

I was told they wouldn't let me go past 42 weeks anyway bc the placenta can start to stop working fully. Also the baby gets bigger and the placenta might not be able to supply enough nutrition to bigger babies etc.

My dd also had meconium in the water, so it was a good thing she came out when she did. She was okay, but they had a pediatric nurse come in right before she was born just in case.

Re: Ladies that have been induced

I had a great experience. Was induced at 40wks 3days.

Cervadil around 2am, started pushing around 5pm, had DS at 6:20pm. Wasn't dilated at all when they gave me cervadil - but was at about 7cm by 8am.

I'm praying that I get induced this time around too!

Ladies that have been induced

I was induced starting at 5a.m. (I was already almost 5cm dilated when they started the pitocin). My doctor broke my water a little after 7a.m, I got the epidural, and only pushed for an hour and a half before DS was born. I had a very positive experience.

Re: Ladies that have been induced

I had a good experience with being induced. All in all it took 19 hours, but only about 30-40 minutes of it pushing. I started out not being dilated at all so I was told it could take a very long time but I have to say it felt like it went pretty quick. My water broke on its own about halfway through. Then the pain began but I got the epidural which helped tremendously. Although this time I'm very much hoping for labor to start on its own, I have to say that last time the induction went about as well as I could have hoped.

Good luck!!!! Stay positive & as relaxed as you can, I believe that can help a lot.

nope, just that it took a long time to wean my body off. I couldn't get a regular maternity room until I could walk on my own. my legs were like bricks so I was stuck in the recovery/delivery room for almost 2 hours after birth. it sucked because all my family was in the waiting room but I couldn't see them. by the time I got my maternity room it was 9pm and everyone had left.

I was induced at a fingertip dialated... cervadil went in at 6pm, started contracting on my own by 10pm, fast and furious labor ensued, it happened too fast for me to get an epidural, and DS was born just before 4am, less than 12 hours later. I did have crazy tearing and the labor pains were blinding but I can't really complain because it did all happen so quickly!

Ladies that have been induced

It all depends on your body. I was induced at 2cm. They gave me some medication that I had to drink every 2 hours until I started to dialate. After 2.5 hours (2 drinks) I went to 5cm. Stalled at 7 and went to 10 about 10 hours after being admitted. Pushed for 2 hours but ended in a csection for other complications. From admission to baby out was 12 hours.

Try not to worry too much, although I know easier said than done. I had a successful induction. I took Cervadil and progressed enough on my own that I didn't end up needing Pitocin. I had an epidural and delivered vaginally.
