Summer is another problem, they can't be home alone all summer !
One issue is , if I do return to work, we will be paying for sitters or aftercare for a very long time
I'm not worried about their independence, at all. If I'm fortunate enough to not have to work FT, I would prefer to be here for them.
They CAN be home alone in the summer. It is not unheard of.
Maybe she doesn't want them to be though. You post about this a lot, and just because you let your kids come home to an empty house, or let them stay home alone all Summer, doesn't mean that everyone else wants that for their child.
There are many stay at home parents in this world, who happen to be home when their kids are home from school. I highly doubt those kids grow up to be leaches who can't do anything independently in life

Oh no I agree with you, I wasnt trying to say that. I am just saying that there are so many "helicopter" parents now who wont let their kids do anything (example was a question what age will you allow them to go to the mall with friends and the majority of the answere were 18 and above) but think they can go off to college and not have any leeway before that.
Also, it is very hard to say what you will do or how you will feel in years down the road or even where you are at that point.
I only say that as I have that tween and teen now and when I had very young kids I would say there was no way I would allow them to do this or that and things change. Circumstances change, they mature and you realize that while you will always worry about them, you have to let go a little bit every year.

I just realized that for my School district, middle school starts in 5th grade. My DS would only be 9 years old when he starts. There is no way you can leave a 9 year old home after school. If I do work FT we would still need a sitter at that point.

I think this depends on the child, their maturity level, and your comfort level as a parent. Honestly, I don't see myself leaving my kids alone at 9 years old. IMO that is still VERY young, too young to be home alone in a house for any length of time. A quick trip to the store for a few minutes? Maybe. But HOURS?? I think that's WAY too long for a 9 yr old.

I agree, WAY to young. I don't get the push to make these kids so independent at such a young age.

I agree, WAY to young. I don't get the push to make these kids so independent at such a young age.
I can not imagine leaving my 9 YO alone! I have 8 yo nephews, no way in hell

Do you have a 9 year old?
9 year olds should not be left home alone for hours. Absolutely not.
I think 12 and up is ok for a few hours in the day time. I actually recall the first time I was alone (I was 12).

9 year olds should not be left home alone for hours. Absolutely not.
I think 12 and up is ok for a few hours in the day time. I actually recall the first time I was alone (I was 12).
I agree and I have had 2 9 yr. olds already and would not leave them home alone. They were both 11 when they were left home.
