This story is beyond horrible; incomprehensible even. This poor father!

From what I have read; his wife is still not aware of the loss of her seven children until she gets better in the hospital. I can't even fathom once she finds out. I can't help but think she is going to blame herself for this; which is not good either.

I have never used a hot plate so I have no knowledge of how they work but aren't they plugged in? Or do they run on battery?? I know someone on here posted no electric is allowed; however, if hot plates are used; Crockpots I think would be much safer, no?

They are plugged in.

When I lived in Williamsburg one of my neighbors knocked on my door one Friday night to unplug theirs for them because they were concerned it wasn't working properly. I was so confused because this was the first time I had ever been asked to help.

Electric is allowed. They just can't turn it on or off. All lights are on timers and they leave a stove or appliance in low to keep food warm. They can't even have the light in the frig working because if it comes on when they open the frig it's against the religion.

What they did as for the hot plate is the norm in the community.

She and her husband are to blame for this. They had one smoke detector and it was in the basement. SMOKE RISES. So if the fire starts above the basement, good luck. And if what a PP said about it being Jewish tradition to have only one smoke detector is true, I want to see where in the Old Testament they talk about smoke detectors.

I don't mean to sound insensitive, as this is simply awful but this is absolutely the parents' fault. There is a tradition of only having ONE smoke detector? Please tell me this isn't real.

The sad part is I can guarantee this will not deter other families from using these hot plates or encourage them to get more smoke detectors. The ultra orthodox community do not own tvs, they do not read mainstream newspapers or secular websites and they will certainly not listen to the cops or firefighters. Unless these mandates come from a rabbi they will fall on deaf ears. I wouldn't be surprised if much of the community doesn't even know this happened.

There is no Jewish tradition to only have 1 smoke detector. I've never heard of that.

Do you remember 2 months ago when the woman was killed because she stopped her car on the tracks? That my title was "stupid people who..."

And do you remember people saying to me "her family might read this? Isn't bad enough they lost their mom, but the people attacking her is worse?"

I remember that.

This is the same thing. And if she survives she might read some of these comments. I won't be the person to judge when most Americans do t even know how to use a car seat correctly.

It's easy to say this after the fact. And be angry. I say we temper our judgement on this poor family that, at the end of the day lost 7 children and most likely will loose the mom and the 8th child as well.

wait a minute, WHY didn't they have smoke detectors??!

Unfortunately, A LOT of people do not have them... Why I don't know.

I heard on the news because they were keeping with "Jewish tradition" by only have ONE. Ridiculous tradition. Let's get with the times here. Smoke detectors save lives. This tragedy disgusts me beyond belief.

this is a lie. There is no Jewish law to just have one smoke detector.

A previous poster mentioned a Jewish Tradition of one smoke alarm in the house. That is why I made that comment.

It's easy to say that after the fact? We are talking about smoke detectors. I can't think of a worse way to die, and while smoke detectors won't guarantee survival, they dramatically increase your chances in case there is a fire in your house. To me, not having smoke detectors is the equivalent of not wearing your seat belt. Most of the time, you are probably going to be fine, but why risk it.

I am jewish and orthodox had to laugh at the comment that Orthodox Jews have a tradition of having one smoke detector ! That's just so not true this family did not have enough smoke detectors can't we leave it at that, if you check for smoke detectors in all of the homes in all different neighborhoods you will find homes even with children not having enough smoke detectors. People always feel IT CAN NEVER HAPPEN HERE !
