Investing gift money for DC
How are you guys investing the gift money you've received for your DC? Between the babyshower, Christmas, Baptism, etc we have a sizeable amount of money. What are some options other than a 529? We rather invest the money vs. letting it sit in a savings account. What are you all doing?

Our 529 for our ds (he has 2), is an investment, not a savings account.... It functions basically exactly the same as my 403b and 401k.

Mine has 2 529's as well, gift money I put into a youth account where at the time I received 4% for the first 1k. I keep contributing every paycheck and think I am going to put a portion into the stock market.
Since they're young I think diversifying is best.

Roth IRA. This way the money can be used for anything not just education and your contributions can be taken out at any time without penalty.

In addition to a 529, we have a UTMA account and a stock portfolio for DS.

We have a regular brokerage account , in my name only. I send checks every month, and purchase individual stocks and funds through that account.

I put my DD's in a high yield Savings trough CIT Bank, and invested some in Mutual Funds. The return on the Mutual Funds is pretty good depending on how aggressive you are. We didn't put the pedal to the metal since it's her money, but we are a little aggressive with it.

They each have 529 plans, mutual funds and a savings account. We contribute monthly to both the 529 and savings, and the mutual funds get contributed to twice a year. DH takes care of it all - I believe the mutual funds are very aggresive.

Re: Investing gift money for DC
Because nj has no tax benefits for 529 accounts, we have Utma and stock market accounts.

Re: Investing gift money for DC
We put some in their 529 account and then we used some to get them things they needed/wanted over the years.
