We take our shoes off. I just prefer to walk around barefoot, I don't ask my guests to remove their shoes.

Same here. But I have house slippers.

But guests? I would sooner die then to request a guest in my home to remove their shoes.

DH and I wear slippers in the house, which we do not wear outside. Walking around barefoot is something I never did growing up- it was always slippers.

I personally wouldn't ask my guests to take their shoes off. I don't have carpet so I can easily mop away dirt. But if you have guests walking around your house barefoot (let's say without any socks), is that really so much better? Yeah there is no dog crap at the bottom of their feet but they can have planters warts, athletes foot, fungus, etc.

And if I was asked to take my shoes off and I had socks on, then I'm ok with it. But I don't feel comfortable barefoot. I always wear socks at airports because I refuse to put my barefoot on that disgusting floor. So if someone asked me to remove my shoes and I had sandals on, then I would ask them to lend me socks.

Maybe it's because I don't have carpet so I don't see the big deal - I can just mop up and the floors shine - if someone has carpet I can see the deal with the shoes... it's one of the reasons I DESPISE carpet... no matter how much you try to keep them clean those things are breeding grounds for dirt, allergens, and who knows what else! It can be the cleanest *looking* carpet, brand new, etc... it still grosses me out. I know someone who used to have carpeting (nasty, dirty ones at that) and were a no shoe house... yet, they had 8 cats and 2 dogs and the amount of fur on that carpet was UNREAL. I laugh at the irony of that one.

But I have to wonder... if the person isn't wearing socks/it's summertime, flip flop weather, etc.... are people's dirty, sweaty, smelly, crusty, nasty bare feet walking all over your floors more appealing to you? Wouldn't you just wash your floors right after anyway? So what's the difference if they kept their shoes on?... Ugh and who knows when they last washed their feet!? LOL... and their sweltering feet in the summer heat! SKEEEEVE! NO NO.. Thanks, please keep your shoes on in my house... I'll just grab a mop as soon as you leave and go to town shining up the floors. I don't know, I don't really see it as better. Now this thread is making me wanna vomit Chat Icon Chat Icon

I never mind if someone asks and usually just ask when I go to someone's home, but I can see how some people might find it rude. You never know if your guest has an issue that would make taking them off uncomfortable. Technically the etiquette is that is it ok to ask people to take them off because as a host you can, but it is proper that one should advise the guest ahead of time, not surprise them at the door so they can be prepared. It is also polite if you ask someone to remove their shoes to in turn offer them clean socks or slippers.

I prefer socks or slippers, but to me I am not sure that bare feet is any more sanitary than shoes.

We do not wear shoes in our home but don't ask guests to take off. I cringe thinking how groose it is to have their shoes all over though Chat Icon

Same, though it depends on the guest. I have no problems asking our family. Parties/large gatherings of friends leave them on.

Are you a shoes on or off household?

I had a conversation with my BFF about this yesterday, because I was really upset that I had been upsetting my friends by requesting this (no one is upset, not one of them cares)... BUT, she did mention an instance when she was looking at houses with her realtor and when she got to the house, the realtor turned to her and said you have to take your shoes off... now THAT to me is rude. The realtor should have given her forewarning that this was a shoe-free house and that she would need to remove her shoes when entering the home. Just thought I would share Chat Icon

Shoes off! It's not my culture but growing up I had Turkish friends who were a no shoes house and I love the idea. It is so filthy to me to wear shoes that have been in a public restroom in your home. So I'll take your crusty feet over God-knows-who's urine/feces/blood/saliva, or whatever else you may have stepped in along the way. I think it's rude to wear your disgusting shoes in my house. Nothing to do with cleaning up a little dirt, I'm concerned with all the germs on your shoes that a mop isn't going to remove.

Just about everyone who comes to my house knows our rule. We do ask workers and delivery people to remove their shoes alone and only once have they refused. We have let people keep them on for large outdoor bbq parties where they're really not inside much and I even hate that!

We take our shoes off probably 99% of the time. However, we never ask guests to remove their shoes. The idea of someone traipsing through my house with potentially fungus-y feet skeeves me to absolutely no end. I would rather mop up whatever came off the bottom of a shoe than have to deal with eradicating someone's athlete foot fungus. Especially in the summer when people are all sandals and flip flops with no socks... sweaty, perfect environment for growing all kinds of gross foot fungus... uggggggh. But then again, all feet in general skeeve me so the less I see of them the better, lol.

Irrational? Yeah, probably, lol!

Yes, it's not only Asian cultures, but people in Turkey, the Scandinavian countries, parts of Germany, Switzerland, Russia, India, Africa, etc. take their shoes off b/c of cleanliness, religion, or respect (all tied up in culture).

I can say that there is a 100% chance that my friends who visit our house have been walking on the human and non-human (dogs, rats, mice) blood, vomit, feces, and urine-soaked surfaces of...
- NYC streets,
- public bathrooms,
- Penn Station,
- the subway,
- the LIRR,
- hospitals,
- gas stations, and
- dog parks.

I can also say that there is a less than 1% chance that my friends have fungus or warts on their feet! Chat Icon Chat Icon

But again, our house is no-shoes because of culture (which is rooted in tradition and religion). It just happens to nicely coincide with my personal ideas of cleanliness and health. Chat Icon

Yep..And I wouldn't assume that the bottom of someone's foot is necessarily clean. Yes, probably not as gross as the bottom of a shoe but you still need to mop those floors after you've had so many feet on them!! If they have no problem walking around your house barefoot, who knows where else they feel comfortable being barefoot. I've witnessed a woman come out of the bathroom on an airplane barefoot. Chat Icon And I've seen people on the sidewalk barefoot. Next time you go to the beach, go to the public restroom and count the # of bare feet you see. And if the person is wearing flip flops outside, their feet will have almost as much dirt as the bottom of the flip flop.

If I'm asked to take my shoes off, be prepared to give me socks, disposable slippers or saran wrap for that matter. If I respect your need for clean floors, then you should respect my need to go home with clean feet (and not the warts one of your guests could be bringing in).

Re: Are you a shoes on or off household?

This thread has been really interesting and enlightening to me. I've always been a shoes off household. We live in NYC, and the stuff I see on the sidewalks (garbage, poop, unidentifiable wet matter) that could potentially be brought into our apt by shoes grosses me out.

I honestly never thought I was being rude asking people to go shoeless in our apt. I actually thought the opposite, that it was rude for people to walk all over our clean apt with their dirty shoes. And as someone else commented, my opinion is that shoes are more likely to bring in grossness, then someone's bare feet.

While I still think we'll continue to be shoes free, I did appreciate all the differing POVs on this thread. I feel like there were a mix of posts on both sides, all civil, so it was really nice to read.

I went to India and observed that in the household you come home and immediately go into the bathroom area and wash your hands and feet so no reason to worry that feet are dirty when you walk barefoot inside!

We're not Indian, but that is what my family and all our friends growing up did (and still do).

Maybe there is a whole lifestyle that goes with being shoeless at home, and that's why people who wear shoes get "skeeved" out, because they don't understand the whole lifestyle (or in my case, religious and ethnic culture).

In my entire life, I have never known anyone with any foot or nail fungus or warts or infection. Maybe because we all go shoeless at home, so our feet are aired out? Or we notice problems faster? Or we wash our feet as soon as we come inside?

No one has ever expressed grossness at being barefoot or shoeless in our house or bathrooms. Maybe because our floors are immaculate b/c we don't wear shoes in the house and we still clean them everyday? Our floors are immaculate b/c we like to lounge around on them (sometimes the couches/chairs are empty b/c everyone is hanging out on the floor). Also part of the shoeless lifestyle?

No one who is shoeless in our house is a Britney Spears kind of person who would go barefoot in any public place... that is so gross! Part of the shoeless lifestyle is that if you are grossed out by wearing shoes in the house, you would never go shoeless on the street etc. That would be cross-contamination and completely defeat the purpose of not wearing shoes in the house!

A no-shoe house. It's a lifestyle, people! Chat Icon

Re: Are you a shoes on or off household?

I know someone who always makes us take our shoes off so I always carry socks with me because even if Im already wearing socks, I hate the idea of bringing all their floor dirt and germs back into my house so I change in the car. Its funny though how some people who insist on shoes off have no problem with their dogs and cats running around outside in all sorts of dirt, urine, poop, and other crud and then bringing that inside onto floors, furniture, etc!

Re: Are you a shoes on or off household?

We are generally an off household but if we are having a lot of people over and they don't take them off we don't say anything and just clean the floors very good the next day. Now we have a crawling baby so during this stage I will enforce it more bc I have a good excuse.

I used to feel bad about it bc I guess it's sort of rude to ask people to take their shoes off which is why if its not close family and friends I am more lax and wont say anything but honestly with two young kids its about them not me.

eta: I answered without reading any responses but I will say that if you keep a shoes off house you better keep a clean house, no need to make people take shoes off when you have animal hair and crumbs everywhere, thats ridiculous.

While I would not be happy about being asked to remove my shoes, the above is why I hesitate to call it "rude." I do know it is a cultural norm for people.

I just think of DH, who has major foot/back issues and genuinely needs his shoes for support. In our home, he wears special slippers with extra support, so while the idea of a "guest slipper" is thoughtful, it wouldn't cut it for him.

If we were asked to take our shoes off at someone's home, DH would make a beeline for a seat and stay there for most of the night otherwise he'd be very uncomfortable.

Needless to say I do not ask my guests to take off their shoes.

I sort of want to ask those who said they do ask their guests to take off their shoes what they would do if they knew they had a guest like my DH but no one owes me any explanations so carry on.Chat Icon
