Re: Are you a shoes on or off household?

Personally, we remove our shoes in our own home just because it's more comfortable. We do not ask guests to remove their shoes and we keep our shoes on when we have guests so they don't feel like they have to remove theirs just because they see us doing it.

In other people's homes I will remove my shoes if they are a no shoe house and I'm asked to do so. But, I find it weird and gross to be barefoot in another person's home. Just like you don't want your guests tracking dirt into your house with their shoes on - I don't want to be picking up your floor's dirt with my socks or bare feet. It grosses me out, sorry. I find it uncomfortable, but I don't say anything. Honestly though it REALLY grosses me out if I'm walking around barefoot in another person's home. It just skeeves me out. I may make a mental note never to go back there again lol.

Are you a shoes on or off household?

I appreciate everyone's candor. I guess because none of our friends have ever commented on it (and believe you me, my friends are NOT shy about calling me out for something they are uncomfortable with) it never occurred to me that asking to remove your shoes would be considered rude.

Honest follow up. Would having a basket of disposable slippers make you feel less uncomfortable? Like, brand new ones that could be thrown out when you are done. Again, this isn't for parties, or if you need your orthotic support, just in general.

Honestly, if you were a close friend and I were wearing sandals I'd probably just ask if I could borrow a pair of socks (and I'd hope you'd agree given the circumstances!)

Hahahaha, I'd be happy to oblige and would likely provide you with my most comfortable pair of socks (as long as they were clean). Chat Icon

Thank you! Chat Icon

I'm seriously having a "Norman Mailer" moment over here (for you Gilmore Girls fans out there, though I highly doubt the reasoning is the same).

We allow shoes in our house. I personally think it's rude to ask your guests to remove their shoes, but I do remove my shoes at others houses if that is their house rule. I just don't like it.

Chat Icon I would feel uncomfortable asking someone to take off their shoes.

We take our shoes off. I just prefer to walk around barefoot, I don't ask my guests to remove their shoes.

Shoes off! You all must think I'm really rude because I ask the cable man to take his shoes off too Chat Icon

Dirty shoes with feces, spit, and god knows what else stomping around, no thanks.

Are you a shoes on or off household?

Due to the style of our home, it is impractical to do shoes off in the whole house. In the main part of the house, it is shoes on or slippers or socks, etc. Starting with the stairs that lead to the bedrooms, it is shoes off because we walk around barefoot up there. So we are a half and half household.

Are you a shoes on or off household?

I'm glad no one whose house I frequent require shoes off. I rarely wear socks and if I do, it's because I'm wearing boots That can't just be kicked off so I'd have to sit some place to take off and put back on. That's annoying IMO. Every other time I would be barefoot and that's just uncomfortable in someone else's house unless I'm super comfortable with them and plan on putting my feet up somewhere lol. I would not be comfortable wearing someone else's socks or slippers, disposable or not. I like to keep my feet hidden unless I recently got a pedi or something. My feet are gross lol.

It's definitely better than the alternative - me having to use my socks/bare feet to sweep up dirt on someone else's floors! Chat Icon Still skeeved out by the very thought!

I totally understand that people would be uncomfortable going barefoot - I was just wondering what people do? Abd could you imagine if the new trend is having slippers and socks for guest Chat Icon we will let guests keep their shoes but whoever wants to take them off us welcome to.

Re: Are you a shoes on or off household?

Maybe it's because I don't have carpet so I don't see the big deal - I can just mop up and the floors shine - if someone has carpet I can see the deal with the shoes... it's one of the reasons I DESPISE carpet... no matter how much you try to keep them clean those things are breeding grounds for dirt, allergens, and who knows what else! It can be the cleanest *looking* carpet, brand new, etc... it still grosses me out. I know someone who used to have carpeting (nasty, dirty ones at that) and were a no shoe house... yet, they had 8 cats and 2 dogs and the amount of fur on that carpet was UNREAL. I laugh at the irony of that one.

But I have to wonder... if the person isn't wearing socks/it's summertime, flip flop weather, etc.... are people's dirty, sweaty, smelly, crusty, nasty bare feet walking all over your floors more appealing to you? Wouldn't you just wash your floors right after anyway? So what's the difference if they kept their shoes on?... Ugh and who knows when they last washed their feet!? LOL... and their sweltering feet in the summer heat! SKEEEEVE! NO NO.. Thanks, please keep your shoes on in my house... I'll just grab a mop as soon as you leave and go to town shining up the floors. I don't know, I don't really see it as better. Now this thread is making me wanna vomit Chat Icon Chat Icon

Growing up, in the summer, in my family and my friends' families, we all washed our feet in the bathtub as soon as we got inside. I still do that today. As far as guests, I don't ask them to wash their feet Chat Icon but I would rather have their sweat on my floor than the bottom of their shoes which, as I mentioned earlier, have been in public bathrooms (Penn Station, anyone???), NYC sidewalks (a.k.a. dog bathrooms), gas stations, etc. Anyway, I give my friends the benefit of the doubt that they have pretty clean feet. Chat Icon

As far as people feeling gross walking barefoot in other ppl's houses, our floors are clean because (i) we don't wear shoes in our house Chat Icon and (ii) we clean our floors everyday (another cultural holdover, or maybe just my family). We actually get comments all the time on how NICE our floors feel to ppl's feet! Chat Icon As in, "so smooth and cool and soothing"!

We wear shoes sometimes, sometimes not. I have all wood so I swiffer and sweep the floors daily and mop them maybe 1-2x a month. I might be a slob though. We also only use the side door which enters through our kitchen so the st of the house doesn't get mush traffic
