nursing home please help
My mil was in the hospital for a month (stage 4 lung cancer and she had a collapsed lung). She was discharged Friday to a sub acute rehab/nursing home to help build up her strength because she is not ready to go home yet. The place she is in is not good. We are not happy. She is in New Glen Oaks nursing home.
Does anyone have any places they know are good in Queens or Nassau? She was denied to 4 places. I'm not sure why. One said because she smoked, but she hasnt smoked since her diagnosis in August. Thanks!!

My grandmother was in Margaret Tietz Nursing and Rehabilitation for rehab. My grandfather was in the hospice section and my aunt is currently there for Alzheimer's care. My entire family has been very pleased with the care our loved ones have received from here.
I also have a friend whose great aunt (she is 107) that has been here for years and they too are very pleased.

Its hard to get into Margaret Tietz, and I do agree that they are fabulous. We tried hard to get MIL in there for hospice care, but there was availability.
MIL was in Parker Jewish (attached to LIJ) for rehab after a hospital admission and then went straight into hospice care. Her cancer had progressed and there was no coming home for her.
I'm trying to think of others.
My mom did rehab at Grace Plaza in Great Neck, following surgery for a broken femur. Not bad either.

When I worked as an OT, my patients really liked Grace Plaza in Great Neck and Sands Point Rehab.

My grandmother recently had a stroke and had a really positive experience at LIJ Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation. She was there about 6 weeks and is home now and doing well. Good luck!

I wouldn't necessarily recommend Orzac. The nursing staff were sweet and competent, but the social work department didn't have a clue as to what they were doing and there was way too much confusion among the different departments. The right hand didn't know what the left was doing. My grandmother was there for 70 days. The day she was discharged, while, again, the nursing staff was really actually good, they did NOT change her ileostomy or diaper in the morning so by the time she got home, she had a mess all over and my family (without the visiting nurse/NA) had to change her... we think this broke her spirits completely, 4 days later she passed. Again, for the most part the nursing staff was good, the individual nurses were sweet and the physical therapists (in fact, we called 2 of them to inform them of her passing), but there was way too much confusion and there was no clear plan of care.

Try Chapin home for the aging or ozanam hall. Both in queens with great reputations.
Most nursing homes do not allow smoking so make sure you say she is not a current smoker and hasn't smoked in months.

My mil who also suffered from lung cancer stayed at central island healthcare in plainview. You can see it from the sob. They were great at the time but this was also 5 years ago so I'm not sure currently.

All of them have their share of issues and everyone is going to have a different opinion about what is a good facility
My suggestion as someone who has worked with nursing homes all over the area on discharging people to the community, is maintaining an active involved presence.
You will often need to speak to the actual therapists in each dept. to get a clear pic of what is going on.
Also social workers frequently have huge caseloads and don't necessarily know or understand the ins and outs of therapies because that's not their specialty. A lot of what is needed post-discharge will unfortunately fall onto the family unless there is someone like a case manager involved and even then, if you live with them, you will share most of the burden.
It is within your right to ask for a family meeting as well, and ask for all team members to be there.

I agree with that, that's why I made a point of saying the positive of the experience. HOWEVER, a social worker should NOT walk into a room with a woman still with the feeding tube, still not eating, and whom the doctors and therapists have all told will NOT be going home anytime soon, and say "So I understand we are getting ready for discharge this week." and do this on a daily basis.... nor should it take 6 weeks and multiple requests before a woman who has clinical depression and regularly sees a psychiatrist to be seen by one.
Nursing home / Rehab staff have an incredibly difficult job. Trust me when I say that I am not blaming the individual social workers, I'm blaming the administration and organization of the facility.

It may be harder for her to transfer from one rehab. to another, because priority is given to patients coming from the hospital.
As far as recommendations, the ones people her have mentioned are good: Margaret Tietz, The Grand, Ozanam. You can also try Silvercrest and Fairview. It's really important to take a tour of the facility prior to making a decision, though.
As far as being denied, is there a plan for chemo and/or radiation? Sometimes facilities don't want to get stuck with the bill for an expensive drug, and will deny based on diagnosis.

I agree. Often problems you see in facilities do trickle down from the top.
Also giving my general experience with how these places are.

Thank you all!!! As of now, her oncologist said no more chemo. She's too weak. He said he estimated 3 months. I think we should do hospice but she wanted a rehab/nursing facility.
Ozanam in bayside denied her. They said because she smokes but she hasn't since last august when she was diagnosed. I think her chart said 1-2 a day but that was before. We asked to take that out of the chart. We've been looking at places.
The one she is in now is ok. It was my least favorite that we saw but she wanted to get out that day and every other place said no. We tried The grand in Whitestone too.
This place is serving her fruit and a slice of bread for dinner. Isn't that odd?

Please don't blame the social worker. As someone who has worked in the field, social workers basically facilitate the Discharge based on either insurance denials or at the recommendation of the therapy dept. social workers have ridiculous case loads and make crap money and basically take their orders from administration. There really isn't anything they can do if insurance denies the stay. And unfortunately if someone requires private help at home, it is not something that is covered by insurance.

I absolutely wasn't!!!! I blame the administration. I agree, social workers case loads are outrageous, and believe me there is more to the story than I could possibly write. Everyone was very nice, and the social workers individually tried their best, but those places are always so understaffed, it's amazing more mistakes don't happen. There is also (usually) a high turnover rate at nursing facilities (not familiar with orzac specifically with regards to that).

No one should ever have to go through the ordeal of being in a nursing home....they are not pleasant environments period, and bottom line, in many cases, a lot of the aspects of care one receives, will never be as good as from family or even outside community services.
I wish there was a way we could do better for our seniors and those in need of skilled care.
It's understandable why people lash out, whether or not it's misdirected or not.
