Should she switch REs?

Hi ladies,
I'm crashing with a question for my sister. She went to the RE for the first time this week. She has an unpredictable cycle. It was cycle day 13. They did a sono & bloodwork & said she has one large follicle & was about to ovulate. She took an at home ovulation test & it said "low fertility." She went back yesterday, & they told her it wasn't a follicle, it was a cyst. She went back today, & they said it IS a follicle because it grew & a cyst wouldn't grow, & that her estrogen levels indicate she's going to ovulate.

???

Does it seem like they don't know what they're doing?! Also, the dr is not doing the sonograms, a tech is. Is that the norm?

Thank you for any advice!

At the RE I went to, the RE always did my sonos, but I know elsewhere that techs do it. It's what your sister is comfortable with.

As for whether she should change, if she doesn't have confidence in the RE, then it can't hurt to look elsewhere.

She can ask to speak to the RE. Both REs offices I went to the Dr. did all sonos. I personally wouldn't go somewhere where it was always done by sono techs. Thats just me though.

My RE always told me that on a sonogram a cyst and a follicle can look the same. The only way to tell for sure is to do blood work. However if she's not comfortable with the Dr she should switch to a practice where she is.

If it's a high volume practice with multiple doctors, then the sonos will be done by the technicians usually. I agree that the re should be able to tell if it's a mature follicle by doing blood work

Re: Should she switch REs?

Well I know with my very first IVF cycle I was doing stims for a couple of weeks then one morning I went in for monitoring. My RE was ecstatic since my follicles were measuring in the 20s which means retrieval time. Well when the blood work came back later that day it showed I ovulated.

Now this was the RE doing the sonogram and didn't see it on that only knew based on my numbers from the blood work that ovulation took place. As a result my cycle was cancelled. I stayed with my RE for almost a year after before switching(didn't get pregnant after several cycles) The practice I switched to the techs do the sonos but the RE reviews it and waits for blood work before giving you hard instructions. I've had success there since I was on a different protocol than my previous RE practice.

If she's comfortable then there's no reason to switch. If she's not then she should. I personally wouldn't if that was the only situation.
