school supplies...what do you do?
my oldest is starting kindergarten and i am so frustrated with her school supply list!!
She needs two 8 packs of markers....well they are $4 but the 10 pack is $1.
two 16 packs of crayons.....well those are double the price of the 24 pack!
it seems like everything on her list is expensive, not any of the stuff on sale! i remember going thru this last year when she was in preschool
do i buy the cheaper ones or pay double for half the stuff on her list!!!

Re: school supplies...what do you do?
I found that everything I needed worked out cheap enough but they wanted 2 packs of 10-12 pencils and all I could find was one 24 pack so that's what I got. I doubt they will expel her from Kindergarten over it.

Re: school supplies...what do you do?
I'm a teacher...I personally don't care if a kid brings in a different brand/type of marker/crayon/pencil than is listed...I'm happy if kids bring anything towards what we use for the year!

I would wait as they don't have the cheapest school supplies out yet. Buy the cheapest also. In that grade, they put them all together and share.

I don't think the teacher will complain if you buy too many supplies.

I would go with the cheaper ones. I was a teacher, and no teacher that I've ever worked with would be mad if there were a couple extra markers in a box that a student brought in. Many teachers just take all the markers, crayons, glue, etc and dump them into bins for the whole class to use.

DS's list "strongly recommended" certain brands. If they were cheaper, I tried to get them, but for the most part went with the store brand. If they don't like it, they can provide their own supplies.
I was not about to pay $2-3 for elmer's glue when I can have the store brand for 75 cents.

Re: school supplies...what do you do?
My only suggestion is to make sure you get washable if is says washable...the other ones really don't come off easily!

Definitely buy what's cheaper even if the exact quantities don't match. I would also recommend buying some extra things so that if and when the supplies run out during the year, you don't have to spend $4 on crayons when they are currently $1 in a lot of places!

I'd buy the cheaper. Our list didn't specify how many markers they were looking for so I went with the Crayola 10 pack.

I am floored at how they can run out. 12 glues sticks per child. TWELVE. Are they eating these glue sticks?

mine said 3 LARGE glue stick and 1 LARGE bottle of Elmer's glue.
I have no idea what large meant! the jumbo? not the super small?
I bought 6 of the regular size and 2 regular sized bottle that are not elmer's.
as long as they have supplies does it really matter?

It seems insane but you do go through a lot of glue sticks in the lower grades. Kids forget to put the top on it and it dries out, or they are super glue happy and use tons on a project. Realistically in kindergarten they may use them1-2 times per day!

Re: school supplies...what do you do?
But what's cheaper. At our school all the supplies become classroom supplies which sort of drives me crazy. They asked for 10 glue sticks but elemers big pack is 12 and was cheaper than me buying individual ao that's what I got.

I'm a teacher and I'll be honest, crayola crayons are better, avery and elmers are MUCH better than the staples brand when it comes to glue sticks. Other than crayons and glue sticks, store brands are fine.

I have to admit, in my experience with DD, crayola crayons really ARE much better. The dollar store crayons, SUCKKKK! Its like trying to color with a candle stick!
Although, DD got a small box of Target brand crayons for a gift once and I have to say they are exactly like crayola. Excellent for a store brand.

I took large to mean jumbo. Target has a 3 pack for $2.99. Shop Rite has the regular sized Elmers sticks - 5pack for $1.29. I bought the jumbo for school and the regular since glue sticks were listed as needed "at home" supplies.

I agree plus everything goes into the classroom anyway so even if you got 24 pencils and jon had 6 oh well you get what you can get. Don't stress over it

LY when DS was going into Kindergarten they asked for 20 glue sticks...yeah, TWENTY!
The end of the year he came home with more than half of that.
Guess what...he's going to school with those that he came back with and not a glue stick more!

sometimes they ask for more knowing that some kids can't afford to bring in all of the supplies. i just wish the teachers would send back home the extras at the end of the year.
