Re: At what age/grade do you think is appropriate for a child to . . .
I would maybe consider it by 5th grade for only 30 minutes depending on the maturity level. However I would first see if a friends parent on the bus stop could watch them for the 30 minutes first. I would feel more comfortable by 6th grade.

I would not do it yet and continue to spend the money on after care.

I know many kids did it when we were younger but I didn't allow my kids until they were in middle school, 6th grade.

3rd grade is too young for me. Do you have any neighbors that he could spend 30 minutes with? I would definitely let the neighborhood kids stay with me for such a short time if needed.

Maybe 6th grade?? At 8 1/2 I would not be comfortable with it.

Im not judging and if you have no other choice than you have to do what you have to do but I would do anything in my power NOT to have my 8.5 year old enter a house by herself and stay there alone for any length of time. I think my biggest issue is having her come in to the house alone. I wouldn't be comfortable with that until a child was at least 12 or 13 and even then I probably would still be nervous!

My ds is also 8 & while he would say he'll be fine, I think he might get nervous being alone in the house. Can you do after care for 3 days & maybe have a neighbor stay with him for 2 days..?

Absolutely not, way too young. I said this on another thread, if your 9 year old gets hurt in a house alone, you will be in big trouble.
Can he go home with another child off the bus? I really hate the fact that bosses can be so inflexible

Re: At what age/grade do you think is appropriate for a child to . . .
I don't know when it would be appropriate, but I think that's way too young. My neighbor does this now, and it makes me extremely uncomfortable. I walk/drive her home everyday and make sure she gets in ok (she doesn't like to stay at my house bc I don't do soda and cupcakes lol). But I would suggest asking another mom, I would have no problem watching a kid for 30 min.

Wow. I'm going to be totally honest here and say I am completely shocked that anyone would even consider this! My DS is going into third grade and will soon be 8. He is mature, bright and well behaved. For so many reasons I would NEVER consider this an option. And, having a child the same age I can tell you that I have never ever heard of anyone leaving a child this age alone let alone on an every day basis coming off the school bus. I'm sorry but I wouldn't call this cheap, I would call it irresponsible and that is at best.

Why can't you pick up your DD after you get DS off the bus? I think he is a bit too young..is there a neighbor that could help out?

Exactly and while I have never done it, I do know a co-worker who has and the child was perfectly fine.

Re: ....
I would use after care, a neighbor, or a babysitter. As a mom to an almost 8 year old son going into 3rd grade as well, I would not leave him alone for 30 minutes. I would be ok with it for 30 minutes at age 12 in 5th or 6th grade. But even then, not all day.
