Group B Strep and Antibiotic issues...

I was GBS positive in my first pregnancy and since I have a known penicillin allergy, I was given vancomycin as the antibiotic to treat it during delivery... except I had an allergic reaction.

So now at 35+ weeks w/ baby #2 I'm positive again and according to the dr, it seems like my options are limited as far as antibiotics go to treat it. She's having a sensitivity panel done on my culture to be sure of what we can use, but she warned me that two of the available antibiotics are considered "insufficient coverage" by the hospital and the baby would have to go to the nicu as a precautionary measure automatically for two days.

Has anyone come into this issue before? It upsets me that my body's reaction is what would be getting in the way of protecting the baby.

I didn't have the same issue, but my labor progressed too quickly for me to get sufficient antibiotics - I actually didn't get any, and my DD wasn't sent to the NICU. So maybe that's not accurate info?
They were supposed to monitor her and check her out, but I was in recovery so long waiting for a room that it was overlooked - thankfully she was fine! They did do blood work, which was pretty painful to watch them squeezing blood out of her heel, but that was it.

What was your allergy to penicillin? Was it as an adult or child?
What was your reaction to vancomycin? Redness or hives & swelling?

What kind of reaction did you have to vancomycin? Was it just "red man syndrome", which is a common side effect, or hives?

Penicillin was as a child and as an adult, and reaction to vanco was hives and itching. Since it was while I was in L&D, I'm all hooked up to the IV and all of the sudden I started getting really itchy, so I started scratching (naturally). My husband was like, why are you scratching so furiously like that? It didn't click right away for me, but he was like you're def reacting to the anitibiotic and sure enough my back was blown up with hives.

I talked with my dr yesterday also about trying another antibiotic with a 10% cross-sensitivity to penicillins and doing a pre-dose of benadryl but the whole situation makes me anxious. To the other poster who stated about not getting the full dose, that's what happened with my first as well, since they pulled the antibiotic after I reacted and they did take him to the nursery a bunch of times for testing but he didn't have to go to the NICU either, so I think the dr just wanted to make me aware so I wasn't surprised in the event this happened....

The whole thing just overwhelms me. Sorry it got a little long.

Can you get tested for the cross reactive one (cephalosporin?) before delivery? Very, very soon?

If you have had surgery before... See which antibiotic you got!

Yes this is one of the antibiotics she was referring to using! I guess I can see about getting myself tested... there's really no harm except for the potentially itchy reaction right? which I could live with if I knew it was a more effective antibiotic.

Yep: I would do it ASAP if you can arrange.
Much worse to get it in labor & have issues.
