How to time contractions?

I'm about 36 weeks and have definitely been feeling bouts of contractions here and there, but I feel them mostly during the work day or random times at the end of the night and I feel like I'm too distracted to detect a pattern. Any tips on this?

Re: How to time contractions?

That sounds like Braxton hicks, which are just irregular and won't have a pattern. When you have real contractions you start timing them once it starts till the end, and then you count between each timed contraction, I have always used an app. honestly I can't remember when you head to the hospital, it might be 60 second long contraction, 5 mins apart for an hour? But you will know when they are real and need to be timed! You won't be able to talk, because it takes your breath away.

Eta: I should have said I never used the counting method at home, so I shouldn't have said how you would know the difference, that's just what I've always been told by my OBs. My first my water broke and I went right to the hospital, and my second 2 I was induced. So I really only know very bad labor pains, not the beginning and what it feels like to time them. But the bad ones, I could barely breathe lol, so I just assumed the OBs were right.

I could always talk through my contractions so that's not true for everyone. I knew they were real bc they came every 7 minutes when I started timing them and were very consistent. I was always taught to time them from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next.

How to time contractions?

I knew mine were real when I felt tightening consistently every 4 minutes. I had no pain until they broke my water in the hospital. When I got to the hospital I was 5 cm dilated and 95% effaced. I had DS about 2 hours after they broke my water.

Eta: I called my doctor when they were 4 mins apart and I was unsure if I was really in labor. They had me come into the office. Turns out they were 2-4 mins apart. They checked me to see if I should try to make progress at home or go to the hospital. Since I was so far along, they said go get your bag and go to the hospital.

How to time contractions?

I just googled it last time and found a website - will do the same his time or download an app. My contractions were not painful for a very long time but I still knew they were contractions and not Braxton hicks.

When you're in labor you'll know bc they become regular. Is download an app to do the "math" for you.
