Re: How to tell others you are terminally ill?

I just had to come back and say I think you are absolutely AMAZING. I have not been able to go to sleep at night without thinking of this post. You are cherishing all the little things (artwork, etc.) and thankful for the time you have had with your family. I can't even imagine the emotions you must be feeling. The fact you are going through this and trying to make it easier on your family to not have to do things (like go through clothes).

I don't know if you've ever heard of him, Randy Pausch. He was a professor who was diagnosed and ultimately passed away from cancer in a short time (like a month), but he was so upbeat and amazing. He knew he was going to die. He wanted people to celebrate life rather than mourn him. He delivered was he called the last lecture. And it has been shown everywhere. He was a very well loved man who had a wife and 3 young children when he passed. It is truly captivating if you feel like watching it.

First of all, my thoughts go out to you and your family. Wishing you both strength and peace.

You have gotten a lot of great advice, but allow me to add one more thing. Take tons of photos of you with your family.

My father died at the age of 38 (I was 15) unexpectedly. I don't have a lot of photos of him. I cherish the few I have.

How to tell others you are terminally ill?

I am so, so very sorry. I can't even imagine what you must be going through- same for your husband. I don't have any advice, but I think the rest of the ladies gave you some good ideas. I will be praying for you and thinking about you. I hope your appointment today goes better than expected. Hugs and prayers to you.

It brings tears to my eyes - reminds me of when my grandmother was dying, she was told she had six months, and she was very communicative of all she was thankful for and I was in awe of her for being so strong and selfless...

Her favorite things, at that time, to do was listen to Andrea Bocelli - The Prayer, in particular. And watch the film, Life is Beautiful.

Now, all these years later, those things that she did have so much meaning - I listen to the words of The Prayer, and I understand the meaning behind that film and you realize that she was thinking about her own mortality during those final months... and really honing in on what truly matters. And to be able to have done that then was just amazing to me.

It's so emotional even typing this now. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: How to tell others you are terminally ill?

I have been through this situation with 2 people in my life in the past two years (My father and my mother in law). My father was the hardest because his cancer diagnosis and his death was within a matter of 3 weeks. I was 8 months pregnant with twins, and could not get to him...it was awful.

My mother in law was a diagnosed a few months after that, and passed within a year. There was a little time to get things in order and process her illness, and this was an awful experience as well, but that time made all of the difference; we had parties, get togethers..we spent our time wisely. I hope you have this time, it will make all of the difference.

My advice is to be straight forward with your children. My family tried to hide my father's diagnosis from me, until they had no choice... I knew there was a secret.

I also think it is wonderful that you are finding peace with your diagnosis; your family may not react the same way. We as children were DESPERATE to find a way to treat and prolong my father's life. He seemed to give up so fast. Just please listen to what they have to say, they have to process all of the information you have had for a while now, and there will be stages of denial, anger, acceptance; they love you and will not want to lose you.

I am wishing you the best, sending prayers to you and your family as you go through this very difficult road.

Gosh. I have no words. As suggested, gather everyone together and deliver the news. This way you all have support in each other.

Re: How to tell others you are terminally ill?

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm so sorry that you're going through this.

In June, we lost my MIL after a 2 year battle with lung cancer. I would say that your children will appreciate you telling them as early as possible so they can spend time with you. It's going to be hard on everyone, but together you can all support each other. Be sure to tell them how much you love them and are proud of them. Also make sure you communicate how you want your affairs to be handled. Knowing what my MIL wanted to happened with her assets and funeral, made it so much easier on my DH and FIL.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I didn't read all of the comments and do not have much advise for you but my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Tell them sooner rather than later so you can spend as much time as possible with them.
