Airport Scanners and traveling with colleagues.
I've flown a lot since finding out I'm pregnant. The TSA agents have continued to stress that "there is no radiation" but I've still opted for pat downs. Am I being overly cautious?
My second question and the REAL reason I'm asking:
I'm only 8 weeks so I am definitely not ready to come out at work but will be traveling back home to NY this week with two colleagues. I've flown with them plenty of times so they know I normally would go through the scanner, what would you do? I certainly don't want to harm my baby just for the sake of keeping a secret. Any ideas on my excuse? We fly home from a small airport so there aren't multiple security lines.
So would you go through the scanner to keep pregnancy a secret or just opt out and make up a lie?

Airport Scanners and traveling with colleagues.
I went throught the regular scanners during both pregnancies, both were before 12 weeks. The regular one is fine, but I opted out of that new one.

At least in LGA (where I am now), it's the ones you go into and put your hands up. Do you consider that regular? That's basically the only kind I see anymore so I don't know what is regular anymore!

Those are the new ones. I've always refused those. The regular ones you just quickly walk through.

I flew at 20-ish weeks pregnant and didn't opt for the pat down.

Gotcha, yea the regular ones are not an option anymore, at least they haven't been. Would you do a pat down if it meant your colleagues would know you are pregnant at 8 weeks?

Hmm. Tough call. I wouldnt want to go through those scanners, but I am also superstitious telling people so early. Are you close with them?
Maybe you can say you need to go to the bathroom and you will meet them by the gate

Re: Airport Scanners and traveling with colleagues.
I would personally not go through the full scanner. If anyone asks, just say you didnt want the unnecessary radiation..

I think that's what I'm going to do. I've also been traveling a lot lately so if anything, I'll just say that it's just a lot of radiation in a short period of time. The colleagues are both men so hopefully they will be like my DH and not really give a ton of thought to it.

That's what I would say. Maybe say you just heard someone talking about how those new machines seem potentially dangerous and you don't want to use it.
I don't like them even not pregnant, they don't strike me as safe.

Before you go through when they check your ticket you can request a pat-down. Maybe do it while your co-workers aren't paying attention. Let them go ahead of you. It'll look like you were selected at random.

Oh! I love this idea! I'll try that. I actually contemplated telling them that I needed to get on an earlier flight and paying the difference in fare!

Re: Airport Scanners and traveling with colleagues.
They're boys, they're clueless! Unless they've very recently traveled with a pregnant wife, I'm sure they'll think nothing of it. Every time I tell my DH something I have to do or can't do or some weird fact, he has NO idea.
