Cytotec and Pitocin

37w5d and I’m not dilated or softening at all. Found out yesterday that I will be admitted to the hospital on 9/23 and given Cytotec to soften my cervix that night and then the next morning they will start Pitocin.

My due date is 9/25. Due to AMA and GD, she doesn’t want to let me go to 41 weeks but she said we will see what happens next visit. I’m hoping they will push it back to 10/1. I’m crazy and want to work as long as possible. I also do not want to come back to work before the New Year.

The more I read about Cytotec, the more nervous I am getting. I’ll be at South Nassau. Anyone have any experience delivering there with this?

Cytotec and Pitocin

I was induced both pregnancies. I refused cytotec both times. Just made me too nervous from what I read.

1st induction I just did Pitocin
2nd I did cervadil then Pitocin. Cervadil didn't do much.

Cytotec and Pitocin

I was induced (not at South Nassau) with Cytotec and then Pitocin. It went really well and I actually have a very positive birth story.

Good luck!

I asked for Cervadil instead of cytotec due to the stories I've heard. Both times Cervadil worked for me to get my labor started without pitocin, but my water was already broken once I got to the hospital so I'm not sure if that is why.

Re: Cytotec and Pitocin

I wasn't induced, but personally I wouldn't let them do anything before my due date.

I'm not liking what I'm reading but then I've been told not to read to much.

It's only 2 days before my due date. I'm trying to push PAST the date but due to age and gestational diabetes she doesn't want to go past. It would be 1 days short of 41 weeks.

Re: Cytotec and Pitocin

My OB recommended cytotec after my induction didn't go smoothly (a few days prior to my due date).

I had a few doses & it didn't do anything (adverse or positive).

Got induced after my due date with plain old pitocin... Which worked.

It's a tough science: I'd ask your MD, who should give you a better answer than anyone!

First my (non-expert) advice is do not get induced unless there is a medical reason for doing so or you are late. If she said not past 41 (which is standard) why are they inducing you early? Personally, I would wait.

Second, I was induced with cyotec and pitocin. I know there are a lot of negative comments regarding cytotec on the internet but I choose to follow my doctor's advice. I trusted him to make the right decision for my personal circumstances. It gets a bad wrap from a documentary that is produced by Ricki Lake, not scientists and/or doctors. Not saying there arent risks but there are risks with everything. I just choose to trust my doctor to make the right choice for me.

The only con to cytotec for me was that you have to drink it every 2 hours and you will be hooked up to monitors and IVs. You basically will not get ANY sleep the night / hours before. I had so much liquids running into me and had to use the bathroom every hour which I had to ring for a nurse to unhook the monitors. Very annoying. I was given pitocin in the morning followed by an EPI (which did not work). I was not progressing (I actaully swelled and regressed) and my EPI did not work so I eventually asked for a C-Section. Pain was simply unbearable from the Pitocin. Once they stopped the Pitocin I felt human again.

Looking back, I would've tried to avoid the induction and pitocin completely. However, I was 8 days late and not dilated or soft so in my instance, at the time, I thought induction was the right choice.

Maybe there are different kinds of cytotec? This was not my experience at all. I didn't have to drink anything? It was inserted inside of me...

Could be. I took a shots worth every two hours. Tasted like water.

Re: Cytotec and Pitocin

I just delivered 2 weeks ago at south Nassau and was induced with cytotec and Pitocin.

I too questioned my ob and another midwife from lij and both said cytotec is the most popular med to induce these days.

I went through 2 rounds of cytotec and pretty much didn't get anywhere. each round is 4 hours long. by the end of the second round, I was still only 1cm, but my cervix was thinner and I was having frequent mild contractions. at that point they said I couldn't get another round of cytotec and they were going to start Pitocin. after a few hours of Pitocin I was 4-5 cm dialated and was just about ready for an epi. my doc broke my water about an hour later. a few hours later it was time to push. the Pitocin really got things going for me. all in all it was 15 hours of labor and 20 min of pushing.

let me know if you have any questions. the staff was excellent and I had a great stay there
