Telling the boss

I started a new job about a month ago. I work for a very small company that's headed up by a super nice lady. I found out I was PG after I accepted the offer but before I started.

I'm planning to tell her towards the end of the month (I'm 10w right now.) We've seen the heartbeat, doc says everything is looking good, I'm feeling good about this baby.

That said, DH and I want to take a babymoon. Because of the distance we'd be traveling, my doctor doesn't want me going any later than the first week of January. We need to book our air very soon if we're going to do this.

So my question is - how do I tell this all to my boss? The pregnancy is no big deal to talk about but I feel like telling her about that and adding in that I want a week off in January is a lot to digest at once. Thoughts?

ETA: I left an hour early to go to the doctor yesterday. In 3 weeks, I need a half day off for a sono (there was NO flexibility on times....it was either miss a full day or a half.)

i would ask for the week off first, and then in a few weeks tell her your pregnant... you dont have to make them a package deal. She doesnt need to know youre pregnant yet.

Or you can see how the convo goes asking for the week and then throw it in that you youre pregnant based on how she is.

What is your vacation policy? Are you entitled to the time off in Jan. If so then it should be a non issue. If not I would not ask for the week off. Will not look good since you just started and on top if that you are pregnant.

ITA. We have very strict policies in place in my office, particularly if you are a newer employee. Maternity leave doesn't even really apply if you've been here under a year.

You said a "very small company." Under 50 people? Then no, FMLA may not apply. Also, you will not have been there a year, so it will be entirely up to your company's policy what maternity leave you're entitled to, if anything.

Apologies, "paid" should've been the key word. An employee here over a year would get 2 months paid, up to 3 months using vacation/sick time. No idea how long they'll hold your job, unpaid, if you've been here under a year.

This. Before getting pregnant, I did a lot of research on this and what my company offered. FMLA mandates a min of 12 weeks unpaid leave but as the PP said, to be eligible to receive FMLA, you must work at a company with at least 50 employees and be employed at the company for 12 months. Otherwise, you must rely on your company's own policy.

I know you're at a small company but do you have a benefits pamphlet you can refer to for this info?

I'd also probably wait to tell your boss about your pregnancy and just ask for the week off separately.

We are a company of 4 so now I see the 12 month rule wouldn't even matter. Our handbook makes no mention of maternity leave whatsoever. My boss is super sweet, but I'm still nervous.

I'd bring it all up and phrase it in a question about the vacation. I agree with the pp that if it put my job in jeopardy I would skip the vacation. I'm also in a small company so I don't have a maternity leave, my Co workers will cover and help out with what they can but I know my boss doesn't have to keep me so I wouldn't want to put a bad taste in her mouth.

I'd bring it all up and phrase it in a question about the vacation. I agree with the pp that if it put my job in jeopardy I would skip the vacation. I'm also in a small company so I don't have a maternity leave, my Co workers will cover and help out with what they can but I know my boss doesn't have to keep me so I wouldn't want to put a bad taste in her mouth.

I wouldn't take the vacation. At my company, you're not even entitled to take vacation until you've been there 6 months. You also don't know how much time you'll need off for doctor's appointments. I've worked at my company for almost 7 years and will not take an entire week off before I go on leave because IMO, my colleagues are picking up my work for long enough and that isn't fair to them.

By law, you are entitled to 6 weeks maternity leave (8 for a c-section). Whether or not it's paid is up to your company. If it's not paid I believe you can get short term disability.

You aren't covered under FMLA and there's no guarantee that they will hold your job or even allow you to take more time off than the 6 or 8 weeks of disability. If they hold your job, you likely won't be paid. I'd personally skip a vacation and save the time to either allow you to get some pay over a possible maternity leave or to have after you come back to work. If you plan on using daycare, the first year will be tough with illnesses and you will probably need to take a bit of time off. You may also need to use up vacation time for doctor's appointments during pregnancy. Also, you have no idea how your pregnancy will go and whether you'll be able to work up until delivery. With my first, I was taken out of work a month early and put on bed rest.

If you still plan to take a vacation, I'd bring that up separately before you announce the pregnancy.

Honestly, I would do a long weekend somewhere and skip a big vacation. I know that's not what you are asking but it seems like asking a lot from a company, in particular a small one, to ask for time off so early when you know you'll be on leave before you're even there a year. Plus you don't know how often you'll need to take of for pregnancy related issues. Not sure when you are due but if it's May-ish you'll have great weather for some more local weekend getaways during your leave. Babies are so easy to travel with when they are young.

Honestly I would feel uncomfortable taking a vacation 3 months after I started a new job especially because you will be needing maternity leave soon after that. Since you work for a small company you are not guaranteed FMLA so I would be hesitant about taking any time off before hand unless absolutely necessary. Also you don't know how you are going to feel towards the end of your pregnancy and if you will need to go out before your scheduled due date.

Unless you already got the OK for vacation time before I would skip the babymoon or do something local.

I know this is not what you are asking, but I would do a 3 day weekend babymoon. You've only been there a few weeks and you need to give the best possible impression considering you don't legally have a lot of job security right now.

I say the vacation is a no no. Especially since you are so new.

And find out about the maternity leave policy. I work at a small company as well and we don't have one in place but I've been with my boss for almost 8 years and 2 kids already so I know my job is secure.

You don't have that so find out. Very important.

I agree with the others on rethinking the vacation. Maybe opt for a long weekend instead.

I, too, just started a new job about a month ago. I wouldn't dream of asking for a week off as early as January, though my company's policy permits it. And, I'm not even pregnant! If I were, I definitely would save my vacations days and opt for showing my job my commitment level.

I agree. I also don't think it looks good in conjunction with the fact you left early for a dr appt and will need a half day in a few weeks also. You will probably need to take more half days or leave early for appts throughout the pregnancy which will be stressful enough to ask for in a new job. If it were me, I'd skip the vacation.

I would not take a week long babymoon, but that's just me.
