Cervix too narrow for HSG?!

Has anyone ever experienced this? Asking for a friend, she's been trying to conceive for 12 months. Dr sent her for HSG and the tech could not even do it, he couldn't dilate her or get the tube in. He said her cervix was too narrow. He asked if she had been trying to get pregnant and said this could be an issue and she has to call her OB.

She is also dealing with sperm issues with her DH - low motility and morphed sperm. She hasn't seen an RE yet - has zero coverage but thinking this will be her next step.

Wow, I never heard of that.
If her Cervix is narrow for an HSG; does she have pain during intercourse?

If not; then something here doesnt make sense.

Just in my opinion, once her GYN noted that her DH had some sperm issues, she should have been forwarded to an RE. It seems odd to me that her GYN would order the HSG.
I have had two HSGs and they have both been with an RE. If I were her, I would make a consult with an RE.

Cervix too narrow for HSG?!

My hsg test was thankfully ok but they did have trouble getting into my cervix at first. They had to use a different catheter to get in. Once they did my tubes were clear but it was very painful for me. The nurses said they never saw anyone lift off the table before from the pain! Lol thankfully it was only for a second... As far as we know it didn't cause any fertility problems but we are having our first iui tomorrow...I def could see how it could cause a problem if it's too narrow. Good luck to your friend!

Her OB knows her insurance situation and ordered the HSG under a different medical code like irregular periods to get it covered. If she went straight to RE it would go usner infertility and she's have to pay out of pocket. She has zero IF coverage, even for diagnosis.

She is referring her to an RE and DH is also seeing a specialist. However she is going to try and have someone at stonybrook try to do the hsg. Someone who has experience with dilating. Just found this out. Ugh sounds painful

Thx for sharing. Did your dr ever say the narrow cervix could cause IF? Or have you had other issues?

Let me know how the IUI goes. As far as pain too - hope you don't have any! Good luck with the process tomorrow!!!

is her policy based in NY? B/c NYS has mandates towards the diagnosis of IF. they dont mandate that insurance policies cover IVF, but I think specifically the testing:

From Fertilityauthority.com:
ew York fertility treatment insurance law states that “infertility” will be determined in accordance to the guidelines established by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

The fertility treatment insurance law clarifies that the following fertility diagnostic tests and fertility treatment procedures must be covered: hysterosalpingogram, hysteroscopy, endometrial biopsy, laparoscopy, sono-hysterogram, post coital tests, testis biopsy, semen analysis, blood tests and ultrasounds. Any health insurance policy that provides coverage for prescription drugs must also include coverage for fertility medications that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the diagnosis and treatment of infertility.

New York Infertility Insurance Mandate Limitations
Like most of the states that have laws in place to cover fertility treatment costs, New York law does include some stipulations for coverage. Most noticeably, IVF costs are not covered under New York law. Additionally, insurance plans are not required to cover the following:

Assisted reproduction procedures including in vitro fertilization (IVF), gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) , or zygote intra fallopian transfer (ZIFT)
The reversal of elective sterilization procedures (tubal ligation or vasectomy)
Sex change procedures
Cloning
Experimental medical or surgical procedures for fertility treatment
New York law on fertility treatment coverage specifies that coverage will be provided for patients only between the ages of 21 and 44. In order to be eligible for coverage, individuals must also have been covered under the policy for at least 12 months.

The doc never mentioned this being an issue for us. I have premature ovarian aging so I'm only 34 but my eggs are more like 45... DH doesn't have any issues.

Good luck to your friend!

All of my testing prediagnosis was covered and I have no infertility coverage. I paid oop for meds and all three ivf cycles. I encourage you to tell your friend to go to an RE and her DH a urologist. Good luck

Cervix too narrow for HSG?!

The Dr doing the HSG should be using a smaller catheter. Thats what they did for me. THe cervix is not too narrow.....it stretches. But I would go to a different radiology place if the first said that.

Also my OB GYN ordered my test. It doesn't matter who orders it as long as she finds out results.
