Please don't quote as I will be taking this down. Both of our dc's are named after people. Now that I'm pregnant with number 3, we have the same intention. We always said if we have 2 boys, we would name the 2nd after a certain someone. Here's the issue or nonissue. Bil and sil are newly married and trying. When she asked us about names and we said the names we like, she flipped saying that's "their" boy name. Now it's not like we've pulled this name out of nowhere all of a sudden. For a period of time when I was pregnant with ds #1 and they were dating, we considered using this name for him and it was a nonissue. I wouldn't even mind if they use the name also, should they have a boy.
Would this be an issue or would you not worry about it?
If you mentioned it before and it was a non issue, i dont see why all of a sudden its an issue now...I would just kindly say that this is a name I have always wanted and Im sorry, but I am not about to change my mind now - if she has a problem, then thats on her. My brother and 3 cousins are all names Michael, obviously no one in my family cared about sharing names, lol.

Issue or nonissue?
The only reason I wouldn't use it is if it's your BIL's name. Otherwise, it's fair game.

Issue or nonissue?
It's not bil's name. It's dh's uncle and cousin's name. His cousin passed unexpectedly but we wanted to use the name prior to his passing because they have been huge parts of our lives.

She is nuts. You are already pregnant, you get dibs first. What if they never have a boy? This is why I don't disclose our potential baby names, people are crazy. Choose the name you want.

Re: Issue or nonissue?
Definitely not an issue. Personally the only thing I'd take into consideration is if it was your bil's name, but since it isnt't... I hate when people act like they own names.

Agreed. Besides, it's clearly a family name so who cares if they wind up using it as well.

I would tell her well we can both use it. I do not own names. if you like the name I am naming my kid, by all means use it for your own kid too. no one reserves the right to hold a name hostage IMO

That's exactlty what we said. It wouldn't bother me in the least bit If they want to use it, too. And if we end up having a girl and they have a boy and they use it, I would be more than fine with that.

Issue or nonissue?
Non-issue.
Many years ago, before DH and I were even engaged, his sister got pregnant and was going to use my favorite girl's name if she had a girl. She had a boy. Then she had another boy. Years later, I got pregnant. If I had a girl, the name was mine. Then that b!itch Kate Middleton used it and DH refused because it had become "too popular." I was so close! And yes, I had a girl.
Point being, no one owns a name!

Why would you listen to your husband?! Or did you still use the name? It was my favorite for years and yes I still named my baby that regardless of Kate Middleton using it too!

Ditto- love the name and don't care if it is #1 this year.
To the op - your bil/SIL have a lot of nerve calling dibs on a name when they aren't even pregnant yet. How crazy. Use the name and don't even think about it.

I didn't! I love my dd's name and it totally suits her. BUT, I'll be pining over Charlotte forever!
