Maternity leave in NYS

I just found out from HR that our "maternity leave" is essentially just what FMLA gives us. I can apply for my 6 or 8 weeks of Short Term Disability and I get up to 12 weeks unpaid through FMLA. I don't know where to even look it up, so does anyone else know what the pay rate is for STD in NYS? I know it's not 100% of my salary, so this is definitely going to put a major stressor on DH and I...we cant afford for me to take anything more than the standard 6 weeks unfortunately. We need both of our salaries to pay the bills.

Re: Maternity leave in NYS

Yeah there really is no such thing as maternity leave anymore. Some companies are nice and pay for it, but most that I know of do not give you a damn thing.

I don't know the exact rate but for me it was under $200 a week.
It was peanuts, barely bought diapers.

I was unpaid as well as I had ZERO vacation time banked as I just started a new job.

It stunk, I went back in 8 weeks because that was all we could afford to be without my salary.

Can you start banking up vacation and sick time?

ETA- just saw that the max is $170 a week

Maternity leave in NYS

My company had unpaid leave. The only thing I got was 6 weeks (vaginal birth) of short term disability. It wasn't much though. I think the whole 6 weeks was less than 1 of my normal pay checks biweekly

I'm on week 10 of my 12 weeks. Luckily I had enough vacation and sick time to cover 10 weeks full salary and then the disability check. Disability is $170 per week - 6 weeks for vaginal, 8 for csection.

INSANE! I don't know how we're even going to survive 6 weeks of me being out of work at that rate. I do have 2 weeks of vacation/sick time that I can use towards it, but that's assuming I don't take ANY days between now and November. I don't see that happening.

Wow. That is absolutely terrible. I work for a European-based company so I'm very lucky but didn't realize how horrible maternity leave is for most women. I knew it wasn't great but this is really appalling.

Yep. It's awful. And the reason why I took only 3 weeks or so maternity leave. I just had no other choice. It's really sad.

Re: Maternity leave in NYS

I believe it really has to do with where you worked.

For both of my pregnancies I collected about $625 bi weekly for 6 weeks (8 weeks with DD since she was a c-section). After that it was vacation time for the remaining 4 weeks. I worked for a non profit institution.

ETS: I know how lucky I was to collect that much, since mos family and friends were collecting well under $200. Maternity leave is such a joke in this country and something really needs to be done to make it easier on families.

Was this company-paid? My company doesn't pay for any portion of maternity leave, so it's only what the state provides for Short Term Disability, which is less than $200/week.

My company has short term disability so I received more than just NYS disability for 5 weeks (it was capped at the amount the company would have paid out of their private policy, they just deducted the NYS amount from it).

For the rest of my time off - I used PTO or took it unpaid - I went back around 10 weeks each time.

I BELIEVE it was a combination of both state and company paid.

This exactly. My company pays for 6 weeks for a vaginal delivery or 8 weeks for c section but if not, this is what I would get. They explained since they pay my full salary, the company gets this money.

If your employer does not have a STD policy then yes you will get the NYS rate which is just ridiculous. I know how it can be stressful financially while out on maternity leave, we had to borrow from savings just to pay some of our bills while I was out on unpaid leave.

Do you have vacation/sick time you can use for maternity?

When I had my DD I saved all my time. I ended up having 11 of my 13 weeks paid for using sick, vacation, and personal time.

This time around I work for a company that only gives 3 weeks a year and whatever you don't use you lose so I won't have much accrued when I take Maternity leave. So, I took out an independent short term disability policy. Between that and my saved vacation I should be able to take about 9 weeks paid. The Short Term disability policy doesn't cover my whole salary, but it's better than a few hundred a week!

But just remember that you have to take out the independant short term disability policy BEFORE you get pregnant
I wish I had.
I looked at AFLAC and similar, but they said you weren't covered if you give birth within 10 months of signing it.

Maternity leave in NYS

I literally took no days off of work when I was pregnant. I worked til my due date. I had about 4 weeks of vacation time paid out but other than that my job did not pay anything except for the 170 - week which was sent to me in one check about the time I was ready to go back!

Correct. You can not cash in on this policy within 40 weeks of activating it.

What if you have STD through your job? Can you apply for that when you give birth?

Yes - you can. Speak with Hr and they will let you know the process.

My company pays 5 weeks (after a one week elimination period) for vaginal birth or c-section (it changed somewhere between 2009 and 2012 - they used to pay 7 weeks for a c-section).

yes that's different. Your company holds the policy for it's employees as a perk- so you are covered under it from the time you are employed.
Personal policies that you purchase on your own are a different story.
They want to avoid people just buying it because they know they are pregnant to get the payouts for their time off
