I really don't see how anyone is being nasty to you all. We have all said we understand it's hard. I get that this is a touchy subject but you're picking a fight where there just isn't one. Most of us agree with you and are just offering different perspectives. No one is against you here and you're choosing not to see that. I'm not sure if that's just because you all just need to vent or what.

You experience what some of us are experiencing...the uncertainty, the anxiety, the defeated feeling, feeling like you're going to fail your children... then come talk to me about how SOME..not all....of these comments are not nasty. But this type of comment is another LIF given...the old "I have no idea why you're offended" song and dance. Maybe I am "venting or what" as you put it. This is family's livelihood we're talking about!!! May you NEVER be in this position. You don't have to agree with anything the union tries to do...that's your right but some of you should have a bit more respect for the position some families are unfortunately in.

I've tried being nice and supportive, but since you want an argument... maybe you should take into consideration that some families on here are in a worse position then you. Maybe you should hope that you never find yourself in their position. Some of us have been laid off with no income for months on end. Most of us don't have a union fighting for us. Consider yourself lucky that at some point the strike will end and you will be back to a job that has benefits that a lot of posters here consider a pretty nice luxury. Stop telling people that hopefully they never find themselves in your position, because honestly it could be wayyyy worse.

I count my blessings EVERY DAY. Some people having it way worse does NOT bring me ANY sort of comfort bc my heart breaks for anyone in way worse circumstances. Because I have compassion....which is apparently not something you are familar with.
So you stick with your "ignorance is bliss" stance. I've stated my situation and my beliefs. Your comments continue to be rude....Shocking!
Anyway enjoy this beautiful day. I'm done here.

I understand that your in a tough place, which is probably why your lashing out with people that agree with you. If you actually read anything I wrote, I'm very compassionate and supportive, you are choosing to see a fight where there isn't one.

I really do hope the Verizon workers get what they want and deserve, I just don't see it happening. It makes me angry and sad. Chat Icon

The only thing we want is to keep what we have. We gave up plenty with our last contract.

Your nasty reply to my supportive comment is why I chose to change my tone with you. In addition to that, you repeatedly saying that you hope I never experience something like this is condescending. You have no idea what I or anyone else here has been through. It's ignorant to continue to tell people that they can't possibly understand what your going through.

I'm reading all this and just thinking to myself, thank god for the unions of this country. If not for them, we'd all be working 7 days a week with barely enough to feed ourselves on.

As for the comments about pensions being a relic, companies have the right to find cheaper labor etc etc...well, the day will come when the workers in this country rise up and there will be a revolution, because as a pp said, they chip away and chip away until what's left. "LET EM EAT CAKE" said Marie Antoinette, and it didn't work out too well for her.

Last part of my Chat Icon :

if we keep buying cheap (and dangerous) goods from China etc, we will continue to put our fellow Americans out of work. If we keep going to Disney, who outsourced American jobs overseas, we are simply going around with our heads up our collective asses and not doing anything about these greedy companies killing our middle class literally. Stop and think about what you are purchasing. If Verizon does outsource American jobs, I am totally willing to cancel them as my provider. In a second.

Here is how the managers are being treated in Nassau County this week. Police on horseback have to escort them from the building. It's a 7 minute video... most of the activity starts around the 3:45 minute mark. I have absolute empathy for the reasons behind this strike, and compassion for people's families. It has been said repeatedly here that no one blames the managers, who work side by side with the Union everyday. This video paints a different picture. It makes feelings of empathy and compassion difficult to sustain. The person who posted this video titled it "Running of the Scabs".

I didn't watch the video, but that is just a few bad apple. I am 100% certain your husbands employer has bad apples too. I am glad I don't know you. I would hope my friends would show support regardless of some ridiculous video that doesn't involve my husband or anyone he knows. Very very silly.

Either way it doesn't matter. I know a lot of the managers and they get it. It isn't the greatest way to get through the day but they get it. Not all, so don't jump on me, the ones that I know feel so badly that they are making "blood money" and fully support the workers in the union.

Type #facesofthestrike in your Facebook. Look at the poor boy with his sign who need medicine and health insurance. That is who I feel empathy for. He has nothing to do with a loser acting like an idiot on a picket line! Most are picketing peacefully. I have seen them with my own eyes.... Not YouTube! Bad apples in every bunch and amongst every class of people....blue collar, white collar......

I have repeatedly said that I don't want anyone to lose anything. Since you didn't watch the video, I'm not sure how you can comment on it. The behavior in the video is indeed ridiculous. There are moms on this board who are very afraid, and understandably so, for the loss of income and insurance. Again, I don't want that for anyone. However, there are also moms on this board who are afraid for their husbands' safety, whose husbands are cursed at and menaced everyday while they are gone for 12-14 hours, 7 days a week, and who would like them to come home to their families. That isn't silly to me. I'm sorry that you think it is.

But if everyone always says "Well, that's the way it is...", and every year, every company keeps chipping away at all of our benefits, when will it end? When will the employees say "Enough is enough". Do we have to wait until companies take away 401(k) plans, don't pay anything for medical, take away vacations and holidays? Corporations would be thrilled if they could do all of those things, and are trying to do it all the time.

There are many studies that show that if corporations treat and pay their employees well, the company does better overall. Better retention rate, better productivity, etc.

ITA

Instead of throwing up our collective hands and saying "oh well", people should fight for more!

This is exactly what I was going to say.

What's wrong with wanting better?

I agree with you. My husband is a blue collar worker and I thank God for the union he is in because he would literally be working for $10 an hour....Many unionized jobs are frowned upon but I can tell you he does heavy physical work. On the flip side I work in corporate America where thousands of jobs are being outsourced overseas - in various sectors IT, financial , etc. It is so sad.

It's a huge building that does have some parking behind the gates, but also utilizes a large lot across the street.

I dont really see anything awful about this. THeyre yelling at them.. Oh well. This is my husbands building -- those horses are there ALL DAY LONG -- its just how they chose to patrol the area. Whats the difference if they sit there in a car or on a horse? There has been no violence. THey listen to the police. They yell a few bad words... oh no.

I'm incredibly thankful for the NCPD. They are doing a terrific job. Do the police and the horses normally escort people across the street? If you don't see anything wrong with this, so be it.
