Tongue tie?

Has anyone's DC had their tongue tie snipped NOT as a newborn? DD is 7 months and it was recommended she have this done between 9 and 12 months. I definitely want to do it as I would like to avoid any speech issues down the road but it's done in the OR under anesthesia and that makes me so nervous Chat Icon

Why are they recommending it be cut? Just curious. It actually does not necessarily cause speech problems. I am an Speech Pathologist and research does not support it. A lot of kids compensate and are able to make sounds in different ways. Even my son's dentist agrees and doesn't recommend parents cut. I brought my DS to an ENT at 8 months because he has a tie and I was concerned. I decided not to do it because of anesethia concerns (family history of poor reactions). Even if you do get it cut it is not necessarily going to avoid speech issues.

My DH is two weeks old and has a tongue tie. I have not gone to the ENT yet but my ped said it is really our decision if we want to do it now or wait. If we do it soon they said there is no anesthesia involved so i am inclined to just do it not to prevent future problems and also to avoid anesthesia with her so young. Curious if your ped said the same thing? Is there a reason you waited until now to explore having it removed?

They're recommending it to avoid speech issues. The ENT was a little strange, though my ped agrees it's the best move. I'm normally very pro-intervention but I'm a little iffy on this. Interesting that it is not recommended- I actually mentioned to DH that maybe we should speak with a speech pathologist first to get their take. Is it recommended down the road if speech issues arise?

We waited because the ped said nothing had to be done unless there were feeding issues (interesting since she now supports it to avoid speech issues). DD is 70th percentile for weight so obviously she's not malnourished, though we've been having some trouble getting her to take solids (no one things this is due to the tie though). I really do wish we had done it when she was a newborn and then we wouldn't be dealing with this now.

Who is the ENT?

I had a similar situation. I had trouble breastfeeding my now 2 year old DS. A lactation consultant said my son had a tongue tie. I could see that some of his ability to move his tongue was affected. Mentioned it to my pediatrician that said yeah I see it but it isn't so bad. At the same time, I was going through bad postpartum. Long story short, we didn't do it at the time when DS was 1 month.

I still thought about it though when DS wasn't babbling as expected (more likely due to ear infections at the time) and took my DS to see Dr. Mendhelson about it. He agreed there was a mild to moderate tie and thought we should cut just to be safe. He agreed with me that it doesn't cause speech issues but thought it should be cut. I decided against it due to the anesethia and after speaking with a few colleagues. This was when DS was 8 months.

Flash forward to now. DS just turned 2. Talks up a storm. Combines 3 - 4 words. Maybe not everyone can understand him, but I can. He's got a great vocabulary. The speech errors he makes are common for a 2 year old.

I'll find an article that describes the feeding problems that a kid with a tongue tie might have. At 7 months, I'd say just give it some time with the solids. It is still a little young to worry about feeding problems. Keep introducing the solids though. Maybe see what textures she prefers. Maybe she prefers finger feeding or soft solids instead of purees.
